To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, MIKEL SCHCLECKI and WICENTI GHUDRIK, subjects of the Czar of Russia, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny, State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molding-Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
Our invention is an improvement in molding machines, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
' The object of the invention is to provide a simple machine of the character specified having a swinging cover for the mold normally out of position over the mold to permit access thereto and havingmeans for first swinging the cover into place and for then forcing the mold toward the cover to compress the material in the mold.
Referring to the drawings forming a part thereof; Figure l is a plan view of the improvement; Fig. 2 is a side view; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 6 with the parts in one position; Fig. 4 is a similar view with the parts in another position; Fig. 5 is a similar view with the parts in a third position; Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the operating mechanism.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, a base 1 is provided, upon which is supported a mold, consisting of a box 2 having an opening 3 in its rear side. A plate 4: rests normally on the open top of the box and the said plate is provided with a marginal flange 5 fitting around the box,
the flange being omitted at the rear of the box, however.
The plate 4 forms the bottom of a mold, and the ends and sides of the mold are constituted by a substantially rectangular body portion 6 resting on the plate and secured thereto in any suitable manner. The top 7 of the mold is connected with a bar 8 by means of bolts 9, and the ends of the bar are transversely recessed to receive the ends of arms 10. The upper ends of the arms 10 are provided with a plurality of spaced transverse openings 11, and a pin 12 is passed through one of the openings to limit the movement of the arms through the bar. By engaging the pins with different openings in the respective arms, the plate may be adjusted vertically with respect to the mold. The lower end of each arm is provided with a bearing 13, each of which is provided with a stub shaft 14: and 14 journaled' in a sectional bearing 15 on the base, the shafts being in alinement. A spring 16 is arranged between one arm and the base, and normally holds the swinging frame constituted by the arms 10 and the top in the dotted line position of Fig. 2. One of the stub shafts 14: in the present instance is provided with a radial arm 17 (Fig. 7), and the said arm 17 is in position for engagement by the angular portion 18 of a lever 19 pivoted at 20 to a bearing bracket 21 on the base. The opposite end of the lever l9extends into position for convenient grasping by the operator, and it will be evident that when the outer end of the lever is passed downwardly the swinging frame will be thrown into the full line position of Fig. 2, with the top 7 of the mold in position over the said mold. As soon as the pressure on the lever is relaxed the member'23 is pivoted between a pair of similar ears 26 on a plate 27 secured to the base. The inner ends of the members are square, as shown at 28, and areconneoted at one side by a hinge 29, so that the members are free to swing in one direction, but cannot swing in the other beyond a straight line. A bail or yoke comprising a body 30 and arms 31 is connected with both members 22'of the levers. Each arm 31 of the yoke or bail is provided with an outwardly extending journal pin 82, which is journaled in the adjacent member 22.

Ashaft 33 is journaled in bearings 34 on the base, and a cam 35 is secured to the shaft 33, and the said cam is adapted to engage the body 30 of the yoke and draw the said yoke laterally to straighten the toggle levers. hen the levers are straightened the plate 4 is lifted, as well as the ring 6, and moved toward the top 7 of the mold.
The yoke body as shown in Fig. 4 is normally out of position for engagement by the cam 35, and is held in this position by a spring 36 arranged between an eye 37 on the plate 4 and an arm of the yoke. A link 38 is pivoted at one end to the said arm and is connected at its other end to an arm 39 on a shaft 40 journaled in bearings 41 on the base of the box. A second arm 42 is secured to the shaft 40 and extends forwardly into position for engagement by one end of a lever 43 pivoted at 44 to a bracket 45 on the lever 19 before mentioned. A. spring 46 on the lever 43 normally holds the said. lever in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the lever 43 is provided at its outer end with an offset portion 47 which lies across the lever 19, so that the lever 43 is limited in its swinging movement. A sprocket wheel 48 is secured on the shaft 33, and a chain 49 connects the said wheel with a wheel 50 on a power shaft 51 journaled in bearings 52 on the base. The said shaft is provided with the usual fast and loose pulleys 53 for connecting it with a suitable source of power (not shown).
In operation, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 4, and with the swinging frame in the dotted line position of Fig. 2, and the shaft 51 rotating the shaft 33. The plastic material is placed in the mold, and, when filled, the lever 19 is swung into the full line position of Fig. 2. This movement of the lever causes the swinging frame to take the full line position of Fig. 2 with the plate 7 above the mold. When the lever 19 is in the full line position of Fig. 2, the lever 43, which meanwhile occupies the position relative to the lever 19 indicated in dotted lines in the said figure is moved to the full line position of Fig. 2, thus engaging the arm 42 and moving the same to cause the shaft 40 to oscillate, whereby to swing the yoke 30-31 into position for engagement by the cam 35 as indicated in Fig. 5. The cam presses the yoke laterally, thus straightening the toggle levers and moving the mold upwardly toward the top plate 7. The charge 54 in the mold is thus compressed between the top plate and the bottom plate, and a block 55 may be secured to the inner face of the top plate, if desired, to shape the top of the block to the desired form.

1. A molding machine comprising a base, a mold consisting of a bottom and a substantially rectangular body portion secured to the bottom and resting thereon, toggle levers connecting the mold to the base, a cover for the mold, a swinging frame for supporting the cover comprising an arm connected with each end thereof and hinged to the base, means for permitting the cover to be adjusted longitudinally of the arms, a spring normally holding the frame with the cover away from over the mold, means for swinging the frame to bring the cover over the mold, said means comprising a lever pivoted on the base, said lever having an angular portion at the end adjacent to the frame, the frame having a lug for engagement by the said angular portion, and means for straightening the toggle levers to force the mold toward the cover, said means comprising a yoke having arms pivoted to the toggle levers, a shaft journaled on the base, a cam on the shaft for engaging the body of the yoke, a spring normally holding the yoke out of engagement with the cam, a rock shaft provided with arms arranged at an angle to each other, a link connecting one arm with the yoke, a lever pivoted on the first named lever and engaging the other arm of the rock shaft at one end, and a spring normally holding the said lever in position to engage the arm of the rock shaft.
2. A molding machine comprising a base, a mold consisting of a bottom and a substantially rectangular body portion secured. to the bottom and resting thereon, toggle levers connecting the mold to the base, a cover for the mold,aswinging frame for support ing the cover comprising an arm connected with each end thereof and hinged to the base, a spring normally holding the frame with the cover away from over the mold, means for swinging the frame to bring the cover over the mold, said means comprising a lever pivoted on the base, said lever having an angular portion at the end adjacent to the frame, the frame having a lug for engagementby the said angular portion, and means for straightening the toggle levers to force the mold toward the cover, said means comprising a yoke having arms pivoted to the toggle levers, a shaft journaled on the base, a cam on the shaft for engaging the body of the yoke, a spring normally holding the yoke out of engagement with the cam, a rock shaft provided with arms arranged at an angle to each other, a link connecting one arm with the yoke, and means in connection with the lever for engaging the other arm of the rock shaft to oscillate the same to move the yoke into position for engagement by the cam.
3. A molding machine comprising a base, a mold consisting of a bottom and a sub stantially rectangular body portion secured to the bottom and resting thereon, toggle leversconnecting the mold to the base, a cover for the mold, a swinging frame for supporting the cover comprising an arm connected with each end thereof and hinged to thebase, a spring normally holding the frame with the cover away from over the mold, means for swingin the frame to bring the cover over the mol said means comprising a lever pivoted on the base, said lever having an angular portion at the end adjacent to the frame, the frame having a lug for engagement by the said angular portion, and means for straightening the toggle levers to force the mold toward the cover, said means comprising a yoke having arms pivoted to the toggle levers, a shaft journaled on the base, a cam on the shaft for engaging the body of the yoke, a spring normally holding the yoke out of engagement with the cam, and means 011 the lever for moving the yoke into the path of movement of the cam.

A molding machine comprising a base, a mold consisting of a bot-tom and a substantially rectangular body portion secured to the bottom and resting thereon, toggle levers connecting the mold to the base, a cover for the mold, a swinging frame for supporting the cover comprising an arm connected with each end thereof and hinged to the base, a spring normally holding the frame with the cover away from over the mold, means for swinging the frame to bring the cover over the mold, said means comprising a lever pivoted on the base, said lever having an angular portion at the end adjacent to the frame, the frame having a lug for engagement by the said angular portion, and means for straightening the toggle levers to force the mold toward the cover, said means comprising a yoke having arms pivoted to the toggle levers, a shaft journaled on the base, a cam on the shaft for engaging the body of the yoke, means for holding the yoke out of the path of movement of the cam, and means on the lever for swinging theyoke into the said path of movement.
5. A molding machine comprising a base, a mold consisting of a bottom and a substantially rectangular body portion secured to the bottom and resting thereon, toggle levers connecting the mold to the base, a cover for the mold, a swinging frame for supporting the cover comprising an arm connected with each end thereof and hinged to the base, a spring normally holding the frame with the cover away from over the mold, means for swinging the frame to bring the cover over the mold, said means comprising a lever pivoted on the base, said lever having an angular port-ion at the end adjacent to the frame, the frame having a lug for engagement by the said angular portion, and means for straightening the toggle levers to force the mold toward the cover, said means comprising a yoke having arms pivoted to the toggle levers, a shaft journaled on the base, a cam on the shaft for engaging the body of the yoke, and means on the lever for moving the yoke into the path of movement of the cam.

A molding machine, comprising a base, a mold consisting of a bottom and a substantially rectangular body port-ion secured to the bottom and resting thereon, toggle levers connecting the mold to the base, a cover for the mold, a swinging frame for supporting the cover comprising an arm connected with each end thereof and hinged to the base, a spring normally holding the frame with the cover away from over the mold, means for swinging the frame to bring the cover over the mold, said means comprising a lever pivoted on the base, said lever having an angular portion at the end adjacent to the frame, the frame having a lug for engagement by the said angular portion, and means for straightening the toggle levers to force the mold toward the cover, said means comprising a rotating cam, and a yoke connected with the levers for engagement by the cam and movable into and out of position for engagement by the cam.
7 A molding machine comprising a base, a mold consisting of a bottom and a substantially rectangular body portion secured to the bottom and resting thereon, toggle levers connecting the mold to the base, a cover fonthe mold, a swinging frame for supporting the cover comprising an arm to the base, a spring normally holding the frame with the cover away from over the mold, means for swinging the frame to bring the cover over the mold, means for straightening the toggle levers normally discon nected therefrom, and means in connection with the means for swinging the frame for connecting the levers with the straightening means when the cover is in position over the mold.

A molding machine comprising a base, a mold having an open top, toggle levers connecting the mold to the base, a cover for the mold, a swinging frame on the base to which the cover is connected, means for normally holding the frame in position with the cover away from over the mold, means for swinging the frame to bring the cover over the mold, means for straightening the toggle levers normally disconnected from the said levers, and means operated by the frame swinging means for connecting the said toggle straightening means with the levers when the cover is in position over the mold.
9. A molding machine comprising a base, a mold having an open top, toggle levers connecting the mold to the base, a cover for disconnecting the levers with the straightthe mold, a swinging frame on the base to ening means.
