UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJAH MCCOY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO YPSILANTI LUBRICATOR COMPANY, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELIJAH MCCOY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a gage for sight feed lubricators, and has particular reference to the constructionof the guard for the transparent tube.
The drawing illustrates the gage tube of a lubricator and its connections in vertical longitudinal section.
' A is the lubricator cup, B and C are arms projecting laterally therefrom, at the outer end of which are formed fittings D and E for respectively engaging the upper and lower ends of the transparent tube F.
As the particular construction of the connections to the tube are immaterial to the present invention, they are not shown in detail.
The glass tubes which are used for both the sight feed and gage tubes occasionally break, and to prevent the scattering of the fragments of glass a guard is necessary. In the present construction, this guard ,is formed by telescopic tubular guard members G and G secured respectively to the glands H and H employed for securing the packing about the tube. These glands engage threaded nipples I and I on the upper and lower fittings D and E respectivel and the annular packing J is compresse by each gland about the tube. Together, the members G and G form a guard extendin the entire length of the tube between the fittlngs, each member, however, being suitably cut away for inspection of the tube.
With the construction described, when a glass is first engaged with the fittings, the members G and G are telescoped with each other so as to permit of passin the glands H and H between the inner en s of the fittings into a position for engagement with the threaded nipples. As the glands are screwed upon the nipples, the members G and G are drawn oppositely, but still maintain a slight engagement. Thus, the guard extends the entire length of the tube, and the apertures therein, indicated by dotted lines at K, permit of inspecting the tube.
What I claim as my invention is:
The combination with a transparent tube, of fittings for the opposite ends of said tube, one of said fittings being constructed to permit the insertion of the tube therethrough, each of said fittings having an externally threaded portion, and a pair of internally threaded packing nuts or glands encircling said tube and engaging the externally threaded portions of said fittings, said glands being provided with integral tubular extensions telescopically engaging each other and forming a shield for said tube.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
