To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, LELAND S. WVEAVER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fremont, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, and VVIL- LIAM F. ALTENBAUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in filing cabinets and more particularly to that class of such devices in which the leaflets, cards or other documents are compactly stored in a rotatable carrier and arranged in divisions or classes and inclosed from view, one division only being accessible at a time.

The object of this invention is to provide such a device with means for automatically stopping the carrier at the desired division when the same is turned, and to provide certain other new and useful features in the construction and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same showing the casing in side elevation; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4-. is a detail of the stop mechanism showing the same in plan view; Fig. 5 is a detail showing a portion of the drum; Fig. (3 is an en larged sectional detail showing a portion of the drum in section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a similar view showing an enlarged section on the line 7--7 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the leaflet holders detached.

As shown in the drawings 1 is a suitable base or table upon which is erected at one end thereof a circular casing 2 and extending along the rear edge of the table and across one end thereof is a railing 3 to inclose the two sides of that portion of the table which is at one side of the casing and which may be used as a desk or table for writing or other purposes. Mounted upon the rail 3 is a series of clips 4 for holding slips or other documents in a convenient position adjacent to the table. Mounted within the casing 2 to turn upon a vertical axis, is a carrier wheel or drum formed with a plurality of radial pockets 5' arranged in vertical rows and open at their outer ends at the periphery of the drum. Each pocket is of a size to receive a leaflet holder 6 which is preferably formed of sheet metal with an open top and outer end. The spaces between the vertical rows of pockets are closed by panels 7 and secured upon the outer face of each panel is a strip of sheet metal with its edges rolled inward to form a slip holder 8 in which indicating slips 9 of paper or other suitable material may be placed. As shown in the drawings there are three of these slips 9 opposite each column of pockets to indicate that the column is divided into three divisions and each slip is provided with a letter as M, N, 0, each forming an index letter for the holders in the several pockets opposite which said slip is located. In order that these slips may be readily distinguished, they are preferably made in different colors, as red, white and blue with red indicating the upper division of each column of pockets.

Upon each panel 7 adjacent to the plate 8 is a similar sheet metal holder 10 for a series of indicating slips 11., one for each pocket of the adjacent column. Each of these slips 11 is preferably formed of cardboard with a name of a person or other indicating markings thereon referring to the contents of the particular holder opposite which it is placed. Arranged to slide freely beneath the holder 10 is a plate 12 having openings 13 therein and secured in place by screws 14 passing through the holder 10,

and through washers 15 into the panel, which washers are placed in the openings 13 to space the holder 10 from the panel and permit the plate 12 to slide freely between them. Each panel is also formed with two or more recesses 16 for coiled springs 17 which engage one end of the recesses at one end and lugs 18 struck up from openings in the plate 12, at their opposite end. The springs 17 thus normally hold the plate 12 projected from beneath the holder 10 with its outer edge which is formed with a bead 19 to give it strength and stiffness, projected over the outer ends of the adjacent column of pockets to engage and hold the slip holders ('3 within the pockets. hen it is desired to remove one of the slip holders, the plate 12 may be readily pushed inward against the action of the springs 17 to bring its outer edge out of alinement with the pocket and permit the particular slip holder desired to be removed therefrom. In placing the slip holder in its pocket the plate is slid inward and when the holder is in place, will again spring outward and securely hold the holder against displacement.

The casing 2 is provided with a vertically extending slot or opening 20 of just sutfioient width to display one column of pockets and its adjacent index slips 9 and indices 11 therethrough. The case is also provided with a slot or opening 21 near its lower end through which the periphery of a disk 22 forming the lower head of the drum, projects slightly. This plate or head of the drum is provided with an axial stud 23 to engage a ball entire weight of the drum is carried. The upper head of the drum is provided with a stud or shaft 25 projecting through a bearing 26 on the top of the casing and secured to the outer end of the shaft is a hand wheel 27 by means of which the drum may be turned if desired. This hand wheel is provided with a number of faces corresponding to the number of columns of pockets in the drum and each face bears index marks 28 corresponding to the letters upon the index slips 9 of the corresponding column of pockets in the drum. The drum being mountedupon the ball bearing 24, turns very freely within the case and may be readily turned by the operator by means of the wheel 27 or by placing his finger upon the edge of thelower head 22 which projects through the opening 21 in the casing. To automatically stop the drum with any desired column of pockets opposite the opening 20 in the casing, the lower head 22 of the drum is provided with a peripheral groove to receive a brake band or wire 29 which is attached at one end to a stud 30 bearing 24 upon which the on a bearing plate 31 secured to the table 1. The opposite end of the brake hand is attached to a stud 32 upon the outer end of a lever 33 which is pivoted to the plate 31 to turn upon an axis coincident with the axis of the drum and pivotally attached to the outer end of said lever is a weighted pawl 34 to engage a rack 35 secured to the table 36 in the casing. Projecting downward from the lower side of the head 22 of the drum is a series of pins 37, there being one pin-for each column of pockets in the drum and the pins being arranged at different distances from the axis of the drum. A bell crank lever 38 is pivoted at 39 to the plate 31 and carries upon its short arm a bar 40 attached thereto by pins 41 engaging longitudinal slots 42 in the bar. The outer end of this bar 40 is provided with a pin 43 projecting upwardly through a curved slot 44 in the lever 33 into the path of the pins 37 upon the drum.

The outer end of the long arm of the bell crank is provided with a pin 45 to engage a series of holes 46 in a plate 47 secured to the table and opposite each hole are letters or other marks corresponding to the index markings on the several slips 9. By turning the bell crank lever and adjusting the pin to engage the hole opposite the index letters corresponding to the column of pockets it is desired to bring into alinement with the opening 20 in the casing, the pin 43 carried by said bell crank is moved across the path of the pins 37 into the path of the particular pin which is so positioned on the drum that when it comes into contact with the pin 43, it will stop the drum with the desired pockets opposite the opening in the casing, where any one of the leaflet holders in said pockets may be removed. The drum is gradually stopped and firmly held in the position to which it is turned, by the swinging of the lever 33 caused by the pin 37 coming into contact with the pin 43, said lever when so swung, pulling the brake band 29 into contact with the head of the drum. The said lever 33 is limited in its swing by the pins 41 in the slots 42, the movement of the bar upon the arm of the bell crank being thus limited, and when so swung by the turning of the drum, it is held in the position to which it is turned by the pawl 34 on its outer end engaging the ratchet 35. The

in the position in which it is stopped until the operator raises the pawl and swings the lever 33 forward, releasing the brake. band from the drum, said band being preferably made of spring wire or other suitable material so that it will spring away from the drum as soon as the pawl is released.

In this arrangement of filing device, a single vertical column or row of pockets containing the several accounts or leaflets filed under three heads or divisions, is brought into the view. of the operator at a time and he can see at a glance, by the indicating or name slips 11 arranged opposite the pockets, the particular account he wishes, thus avoiding mistakes. By setting the pin 45 according to the index on the plate 47, the drum will be automatically stopped with the desired holders in position to be quickly taken out and held in that position until released, thus greatly facilitating the manipulation of the device.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is 1. Ina filing cabinet, the combination of a drum rotatable upon a vertical axis and provided with a series of vertical rows of radially extending pockets open at their outer ends, a casing inclosing the drum and provided with an opening in one side of a size to disclose one of the vertical rows of pockets in the drum at a time, and a member for turning the drum attached to the upper end thereof outside said casing and provided with index markings to indicate the corresponding vertical rows of pockets in the drum. I 2. In a filing cabinet, the combination of a drum rotatable upon a vertical axis and provided with a series of vertical rows of radially extending pockets open at their outer ends, holders in the pockets, means on the drum between the pockets for engaging and holding the holders within their pockets, a casing having an opening, and a hand wheel above the upper end of the casing connected to the drum for turning the same and provided with index markings upon its periphery to indicate the corresponding vertical rows of pockets in the drum.

3. In a filing cabinet the combination of a casing having an opening in one side, a drum within said casing provided with rows of pockets adapted to be successively brought into alinement with the openings in the casing by turning the drum, a triotion member for stopping the drum and means on the drum for operating the member by the turning of the drum.

4. In a filing cabinet, the combination of a casing having an opening in one side, a drum within said casing provided with rows of pockets adapted to be successively brought into alinement with the opening in the casing by turning the drum, members on the drum corresponding in number to the number of rows of pockets in the drum and having different paths of travel when the drumis turned, a member adapted to be turned into the path of travel of any of said members, and a brake operated by said member to stop the drum.

5. In a filing cabinet, the combination of a casing having an opening in one side, a drum in said casing provided with rows of pockets adapted to be brought successively into alinement with the opening in the casing by turning the drum, a member for frictionally engaging and holding the drum, a lever for operating said member, a member adjustable upon said lever and means on the drum to engage said adjustable member when the drum is turned.

6. In a filing cabinet, the combination of a casing having an opening in one side, a drum in said casing provided with rows of pockets adapted to be brought successively into alinement with the opening in the easing, a brake band for the drum, a lever to which one end of the brake band is attached for operating the drum, members on the drum corresponding in number to the number of rows of pockets in the drum, and adjustable means engaging the lever and adapted to be engaged by one of said members on the drum.

7. In a filing cabinet, the combination of a casing having an opening in one side, a drum in said casing provided with rows of pockets adapted to be brought successively into alinement with the opening in the casing, members in the drum corresponding in number to the number of rows of pockets, a brake band, a lever to which one end of the brake band is attached, a pin movable with said lever and adjustable across the paths of travel of said members on the drum, means for adjusting said pin, and means for holding said brake band in operative position when moved by said members on the drum.

8. In a filing cabinet, the combination of a casing having an opening in one side, a drum in said casing provided with rows of pockets adapted to be brought successively into alinement with the opening in the easing, pins on the drum corresponding in number to the number of rows of pockets and having different paths of travel when the drum is turned, a brake band for the drum, a lever to one end of which the band is attached, a bell crank lever arranged with one end to swing across the paths of travel of said pins, and means carried by said arm of said bell crank to operate the lever and movable into the path of any one of said pins by the swinging of said bell-crank lever.

9. In a filing cabinet, the combination of easing having an opening in one side, a

drum in said casing provided with rows of pockets adapted to be brought successively into alinernent with the opening in the casing pins on the drum having different paths of travel as the drum is turned,

a brake band, a lever pivoted upon an axis coincident with the axis of the drum and to which lever one end of the brake band is attached,. a pawl and ratchet to hold said lever in the position. to which it is turned, a pin adjustable alongsaid lever across the paths of the pins on the drum to engage the same, and means for adjusting said pin.
