VALVE HEAD-GATE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM F. Gimme, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Collins, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Valve Head-Gate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valves more especially designed for Water reservoirs.
The invention has for its object, primarily, to readily control the actuation or opening and closing of the gate or valve proper, asmay be required in delivering or supplying the water from the reservoir to the conduit.
A further object is to suitably retain the valve or gate in effective or stable position, as against vibration or rattling from the pressure of the water when said gate or valve is wholly or partly open.
A still further object is to carry out the aforesaid ends in a simple, inexpensive and effective manner.
The area of the opposite openings being equal, the pressure of the water on one point balances that on the other, thus forming the balancing feature of the gate.-
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as relates to the details of the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the de vice or valve. Fig. 2 is also a sectional elevation thereof produced in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is what may be termed a front elevation of the valve somewhat modified, the discharge or outlet for the water being formed or provided' for laterally through the casing of the valve, instead of providing therefor through the bottom or below.
In carrying out my invention, I suitably provide a casting or casing 1 comprising a lower member 2 and an upper member 3, said lower member having opposite ports or inlets 1, suitably communicating with the reservoir (not shown) for the reception or admission of oppositely flowing streams of Specification of Letters Patent.

water therefrom, the pressures thus exerted upon the valve being by reason of the relative arrangement of the parts suitably counterbalanced. Said lower casing member has also a suitable outlet or discharge port 5, in this instance, through its bottom, and to the bottom of said casing around said port is suitably applied or secured a nozzle or elbow member 6, suitably effecting connection with the conduit (not shown). The nozzle or elbow member is suitably provided laterally, at its upper end, with supporting brackets or braces 7 formed of webbed angular castings for anchoring or bolting this member in position, said braces or brackets having bolt-receiving openings therethrough for that purpose. The upper casing member 3, which is suitably secured or fixed to the lower casing member 2, preferably by bolting as at 8, through meeting flanges of said members, has extending therefrom lateral vertical plate-like extensions or braces 9 for suitably anchoring or bracing the valve-casing in stable position. The upper end closure-member 10 of the valve-casing, which is suitably bolted as at 11 to the member 8, has its inner upper marginal surface adapted as at 12, to form a stop for limiting the upward movement of the valve as presently seen.
A valve or gate 13 provided wit-h a suitable actuating stem or member 13 and preferably somewhat tapered downwardly in general outline as seen in Fig. l, is received by, and adapted to have vertical movement within the casing 1, said valve or gate seating in the lower casing member, as is also apparent from the same figure. Said valve or gate, which is preferably hollow and which is cast with suitable strengthening ribs or braces 1 1 at its inner corners or angles, is seated in position by suitable means, as a planed bronze lining 15 applied to the inner surface of the lower casingmember, and extending all around the said member, forming a seat for the valve. A like material 16 encompasses the said valve, forming a contact or engagement with the valve seats. The bronze lining 15 is re tained in effective position through suitable fastenings. Bronze lining 16 is also held by suitable fastenings and rests upon shoulder 17 of the valve as seen in Fig. 1. A like arrangement of parts is designated at 18, 19 and 20 to aid in effecting the aforesaid result or seating the valve.
The valve 13 has its upper end formed with upward extensions or projections 21 to engage the plane-surfaces 12 of the top or closure 10 of the valve-casing, when the valve is moved upwardly to control such movement of the valve, as the latter is actu ated through its stem in the usual way, said stem being passed through a suitable stufling box 22 in the closure or top 10 for well known purposes.
In order to provide for the retention of the valve against a jarring or rattling action when wholly or partially open, as when subjected to the pressure of the water passing therethrough, a shoe or member 23, having a wedging action, is interposed as seen in Fig. 2, intermediate the valve 18 and its casing 2, said wedge or shoe being initially let into an inclined-walled recess 2% provided in a vertical wall of said valve-casing adjacent the valve. Said shoe or wedge has an upwardly-extending rod-member 25, fixed thereto and reaching out through the closure or top 10 of the valve-casing, for its convenient actuation,- said rod, in practice, being equipped with a hand-wheel (not shown) for that purpose.
It will be observed that, by suitably actuating the wedge or shoe 23 so as to move it upwardly, an impinging or frictional action will be created between said shoe or wedge and the valve laterally, thus effectively securing or locking the valve in fixed position, this being desired, of course, when the valve may be opened wholly or partly, for the purpose hereinbefore indicated.
As suggested by Fig. 3, instead of effecting the discharge or outlet through the bottom of the valve-casing this may be provided for laterally through said casing as indicated at 26, the outlet or discharge mem ber in that case being preferably integral or in a single casting with said casing.
It is believed from the foregoing description and the accompanying illustration or drawing, the merits and advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated, it being emphasized, however, that the same is characterized for great simplicity of structure, while it is readily applied for use, is adapted to be quickly actuated, and is effective in action.
\V hat is claimed is 1. A device of the character described, including a valve rectangular in general out line and slightly tapered downwardly; a casing comprising a lower member and an upper member in continuation of said lower member, said valve being received by said casing, said lower member having two straightaway ports and a third port facing in a direction at right angles to that of the facing-direction of the aforesaid ports, a retaining member for said valve having a wedge-like formation, with a perpendicular surface and an inclined surface, and means for actuating said wedge-like member, said wedge-like member being let into said valvecasing with its perpendicular surface presented to said valve and its inclined surface to said casing.
2. A device of the character described including a valve, a casing therefor and a retaining member for said valve having a wedge-like formation, with a perpendicular surface and an inclined surface and means for actuating said wedge-like member, said wedge-like member being let into said valve casing with its perpendicular surface pre sented to said valve and its inclined surface to said casing.
