ROTATING AND FEEDING MECHANISM FOR DRILL-BARS.
To all whom may concern Be it known that I, Lns'rnn C. HAIcDsoeo, a citizen of the United States, residing at lOttumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvement-s in Rotating and Feeding Mechanisms for Drill-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rotating and feeding mechanisms for the drill bars of coal and rock drilling machines and it relates more particularly to a structure of the type shown in Patent No. 484,425, granted October 18, 1892, to Martin Hardsocg. This type of structure embraces two essential elements, a gear frame and a threaded boxing to receive the drill or feed bar.
The object of the present invention is to provide a novel means for holding these elements in their assembled relation toward the ends of overcoming all loose play, of providing for the quick and easy connection or disconnection of the elements, and of providing for the reversal of the boxing.
Toward the accomplishment of the objects stated, the invention proposes novel means to couple the boxing and the gear frame and of a nature to prevent any relative axial or turning movement thereof, and also a novel arrangement of the coupling parts whereby either end of the boxing may be fitted into the socket of the gear frame and the boxing effectively coupled to the gear frame in the advantageous manner generally stated above.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a preferred and advantageous embodiment of the invention.
In the said drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a drill bar rotating and feeding mechanism in accordance wit-h the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the gear frame in the disconnected relation thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the threaded boxing which receives the feed or drill bar. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a locking key for maintaining the closed relation of the sect-ions of the boxing. Fig. 5 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the device as an entirety, and Fig. 6 is a cross section thereof taken centrally through the boxing.

The gear frame to which reference has been made includes two tubular bearing members l and 2 which extend at right angles to one another and are connected by a curved arm 3. The member 1 is located in advance of the member 2 and forms the support for a driving shaft 4, having a squared outer end portion, as 5, to receive a crank handle and having secured to its inner end portion a bevel pinion, as G. The latter meshes with, drives, and retains in position, a larger bevel pinion, as 7, the hollow hub 8 of which is fitted in the bearing member 2, abuts against an internal annular rib, as 9, circumscribing the bore of said bearing member, and is provided with an internal longitudinal rib, as 10, for engagement in the usual longitudinal groove provided in the threaded portion of the drill or feed. bar, to couple said pinion and said bar and thereby cause the rotation of the latter by and with the former.
The socket to which reference has been made, is designated by the numeral 11 and is an axial continuation of the bearing member 2, being that portion of said member which projects in the rear of the rib 9. The socket 11 is provided at its rear end with oppositely located extensions, as 12 and 13, each having a longitudinal tapered opening therein and the extension 12 having at its upper side a rearwardly projecting lug, as 14, which terminates in an overhanging bill, the provision of which affords an undercut recess, as 15, for a purpose to be later set forth.
The threaded boxing to which reference has been made, includes an upper section, as 16, and a lower section, as 17, these sections being hingedly united by a knuckle `ioint coupling, as 18. The sections, in their closed relation, as shown in Fig. 3, have the usual threaded bore through which the drill or feed bar extends and by which the axial advance or withdrawal of said bar is effected. The sections have smooth surfaced extensions, as 19, at each end thereof, which are fitted into the socket 11, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5 and abut against the rib 9.
The section 16 is provided with the laterally projecting trunnions 21, by means of which the device may be pivoted for vertical movement to a supporting post of any desired construct-ion. Said section 16 has at its side opposite the knuckle joint 18, a pair of tangentially depending extensions, as 22, each having a longitudinal opening therethrough and being located at some dist-ance from the adjacent trunnion 21 and on each side thereof. rlhe openings in the extensions 22 are alined With one another and also with the opening in the extension 12 or 13, as the case may be, in accordance With which end of the boxing is fitted into the socket. Between the extensions 22 and the adjacent trunnion 21, transverse recesses, as 23, occur, in Which are received tongues, as 241, that project laterally from the corresponding side of the section 17. The tongues 24 are held in the recesses 23 by a locking key, as 25, which has a tapered end, as 26, and Which is inserted through the alining openings in the extensions 22 and 12 or 13, as the case may be. The key 25 not only holds the sections against coming open but it prevents any relative turning movement of the gear frame and the boxing. Relative axial movement of these parts is prevented by either one of the lugs 27 and 28, Which are engaged in the recess 15. The lug 27 is provided at the upper side of the for- Wardly located extension 22 and engages in the recess 15 when the parts are. so positioned that the key 25 may be inserted into the opening in the extension 12. The lug 28 is provided at the upper side of the rear- Wardly-located knuckle of the joint 18 and engages in the recess 15 when the parts are so positioned that the key 25 may be inserted into the opening in the extension 13.
The tapered end 26 of the key 25 has a Wedge-like engagement in the openings of either of the extensions 12 or 13 Which assures of the firm retention of the key in its locking position against accidental displacement which might otherwise be an incident of vibration or Wear. The tongues 24 also serve as a means to hold the sections 16 and 17 against axial play with respect to one another in case the knuckle joint should become loose or Worn, and for the same purpose, the section 16 is provided at its opposite sides with raised lugs 29 and 30, the lug 29 fitting bet-Ween t-he tongues 24 and the lug 30 fitting into a recess 31 formed in the section 17.
In use, the sections of the boxing are closed and one end of the boxing is fitted into the socket 11, at which time the boxing is turned so as to bring either of its lugs 27 or 28 into the recess 15. The key 25 is then inserted through the alining openings in the manner explained. The key serves to prevent any relative turning of the parts; the engagement of the lug 27 or 28 in the recess 15 prevents any axial movement thereof; and the fitting of the extended end portions 19 into the socket serves to prevent any loose play or spreading of the sections of the boxing.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a rotating and feeding mechanism for drill bars, the combination With a gear carrying member and a threaded boxing con-y stituting companion elements and adapted for telescoping association, the boxing comprising hingedly connected half sections, of apertured extensions provided on the elements and arranged to be brought into alining relation, a longitudinally disposed and movable locking key for insertion through the extensions, the key serving to hold the companion elements against relative turning movement and also to hold the half sections of the boxing in closed relation, and means for holding the companion elements against relative axial movement, the companion elements being adapted by relative partial rotation to provide for the operation of the means and to bring the apertured extensions into alinement.
2. In a rotating and Jfeeding mechanism for drill bars, the combination with a gear carrying member and a threaded boxing constituting companion elements and adapted for telescoping association, the boxing comprising hingedly connected half sections, of apertured extensions provided on the elements and arranged to be brought into alining relation, a longitudinally disposed and movable locking key for insertion through the extensions, the key serving to hold the companion elements against relative turning movement and also to hold the half sections of the boxing in closed re lation, a recessed lug provided on one of the elements and a lug provided on the other element for engagement in the recess of the first lug When the extensions are in alining relation to thereby hold the elements against relative axial movement.
3. In a rotating and feeding mechanism for drill bars, the combination With a socket and a threaded boxing constituting companion elements, the boxing comprising hingedly connected half sections and being telescopically fitted into the socket, of apertured extensions provided on the elements and arranged to be brought into alining relation, and a longitudinally disposed and movable locking key for insertion through the extensions, the key serving to hold the I movement of the elements such as brings the to be alined with either of the extensions on the socket, and a longitudinally disposed and movable locking key for insertion through the extensions on the boxing and that particular extension on the socket which is alined with the extensions on the boxing, the key serving to hold the companion elements against relative turning movement and also to hold the half sections of the boxing in closed relation, the socket having an overhanging recessed lug and the boxing having a pair of lugs located at opposite sides and ends thereof and either of which, in accordance With which end of the boxing is iitted in the socket, may be engaged in the recess of the first lug, to thereby hold the companion elements against relative axial movement.
5. In a rotating and feeding mechanism for drill bars, in combination, a gear carrying member and a threaded boxing constituting companion elements, the boxing comprising hingedly connected half sections and being adapted for telescoping associa- A longitudinally disposed and movable lock-V ing key for insertion through the alining extensions, the key serving to hold the companion elements against relative turning movement and also to hold the half sections of the boxing in closed relation, one of the companion elements having a single lug and the other companion element having a pair of lugs, either of which in accordance with which end of the boxing is associated with the gear carrying member is adapted for coperation with the firstnamed lug when the extensions of one element are alined with either of the extensions of the other element to thereby hold the elements against relative axial movement.
