NUT-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TIMOTHY E. TAYLOR,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at- Thompson, in the county of \Vindham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut- Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to nut locks and the principal object of the same is to provide a nut lock in which a plate is provided with a flange in which a locking key is slidably mounted. It should be noted that the locking key is so constructed that it not only locks the nuts against rotation, but also prevents its own withdrawal.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the end portions of a pair of rail sections, and shows the improved nut lock connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a View in elevation with a slightly modified type of nut lock from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View in cross section along the line 3-3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking tongue used in Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 indicate rail sections which are connected together, and which are provided with the usual fish plates 3. Bolts 4: are passed through the rail sections and fish plates and a plate 5 is placed upon the ends of the bolts and fits against the fish plates. The plate 5 is provided at its upper end with a flange 6 which forms a track for the reception of a locking key 7. The key is provided with a flange 8 which extends along the sides of the nuts 9 which are threaded upon the ends of the bolts 4 after the plate 5 is in position. In Fig. l, I have shown the flange 8 with its central portion cut away from the key to form a Specification of Letters Patent.

pair of tongues 10 which are bent along the sides of the inner nuts 9. The outer ends 11 of the key 7 are bent over the ends of the fish plate 3 and also assist in preventin movement of the key.
In Figs. 2 and 4 I have shown a slightly modified form of locking key in which the flange 8 is cut to each side of the center at a point flush with the inner ed es of the inner nuts 9, and from the key i to form the tongues 10 which are bent down to contact with the sides of the nuts 9 and prevent the key from slipping out of place.
After the plate 5 has been placed upon the bolts 4, the nuts 9 are threaded in place and turned so that their upper edges will be parallel with the flange 6. The key is passed through the track formed by the flange 6 with its flange 8 contacting with the sides of the nuts 9, to prevent their rotation. The tongues 10 are bent to contact with the sides of the inner nuts 9 and the end portions 11 of the key are bent over the ends of the fish plates to form an additional lock for the key.
that I claim as my invention is A nut lock comprising a plate having one side bent to form an overhanging flange, a strip resting upon said plate and beneath said flange, and an outwardly extending flange formed upon said strip and provided with slits formed adjacent the center and leading toward the center to form tongues extending from the central portion of said flange in opposite directions and adapted to be bent to engage the side faces of a pair of nuts to hold the stri in place.
