FURNITURE-CASTER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn FRANCIS OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture-Casters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in casters and has for its object to construct a caster in such a manner that it will be retained in place when the object to which it is applied is raised from the floor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a caster which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture, and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved caster; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the same applied ready for use; Fig. 3 is an inner face view of one section of the socket; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the angular look ing members.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates the pintle having its lower end mounted in the body 2 of the yoke 3, said body having two spaced parallel arms 4 formed integral therewith, having the wheel 5 journaled between the outer ends thereof. The pintle 1 is formed tapering toward its outer end and is provided at its central portion with an annular groove 9. The socket 10 is preferably formed in two sections semi-circular in cross section, having an inwardly extending annular flange ll Specification 01 Letters Patent.

formed on the lower end thereof. Angular locking members 12 are provided having one end secured to the inner Walls of the socket and their free ends engaging in the annular groove 9. These members 12 are formed from resilient sheet metal, so that when the pintle 1 is inserted in the socket the tapering end of the same may be easily passed upwardly between the locking members to allow them to engage in the groove 9 and hold the caster securely in place. To remove the caster enough pressure should be exerted on the lower end thereof to overcome the tension of the resilient locking members 12 so they will be released from the groove and allow the pintle to be withdrawn from the socket.
IVhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.
Ilaving thus described the invention what is claimed is A caster socket comprising two sections semicircular in cross section, an inwardly extending annular flange formed on the lower end thereof, resilient angular locking members arranged in opposed relation, having one of their ends secured to the inner walls of each section of the socket, and their free ends disposed at right angles to the walls of said sections, in combination with a caster pintle having an annular groove formed therein to receive the free ends of said locking members to hold said pintle in place when inserted in the socket.
