MECH [Utili-iM' FOR ROLLING TUBING.
Application ated April 18, 1911. Serial No. 821,948.
To all whom it ma concern.-
Be it lmown t at I, Winnaar M. Sm.- Klnx, a citizenof the United States, and resident of Monessen, in the county of Westmorelzind and State of Pennsylvania, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Mechanism-for Rollin Tubing; `and I do hereby declare the fo owin to be a full, clear, andexaet description t iereof.
My invention relates to tube rolling appro ratas.
The invention relates more` particularly to that class of `mills for rolling seamless. tubing in which a two-high null is om ploye and the pierced blank is forced through the rolls onto a mandrel supported at the opposite sides of the rolls. The mandrel is then withdrawn with the tube lying,r in the position in which it was delivered` the next step being to return the tubo to this particu ar step in thismethod of rolling Myinventon comprises, generally statcd, in combination with a two-high mill, a mandrol supportant one side thereof` means for withdrawing the mandrel after the tubo haI bcen delivered thereto, mechanism for rai ing the tube so that it. may bo moved into contact with the top roll to he transferia-.d to the receivin side of the rolle, and means for'olearing tie mandrel when the lifting means is lowered, all as fully hereinafter set. forth and claimed.
'In the dri\\vings,'14`igure 1 is a side eleva tion ot my improved apparatus in section; Fig. '.2 is a plan view partly in section; Fig. tl is un enlarged view of the lifting apparatus; Fig. 4 is n front view of namo and Fig. ia ancillargad detail of the lifting rollers and their di fl'erent positions.
In tho'drnwing tho numeral 2 designates suitable housings arranged in a foundation 3. 'I'hc rolls 4 are journaled in the holmtina'r` and urc driven oontinuouslyin opposite dirci-tions by suitable mechanism. At the recci\'in,I aide of tlnI rolls a ro the Iatundurih1 5 which reupport, thc trough or support (i. In liuo with the trough G is the ovlindcr 7 supported ou the bod-platos H. l`ho piston-rod la ronncctcd up to tho combined gripper and pusher l0. l`hiz-= combined gripper and puahcr formay tho subject of an application for Letters Patent of the United States filed by Richard E. Brock and me on the 19th day of December, 1010, Serial No. 598,146.
l have 'not deemed it necessary to illustrate this combined grip er and pusher in detail in my present app icationI as it forms no part of the invention therein.
At the delivery side of the rolls is the frame or support. 1t, which carries the mandrcl-har 12, the end of said mandrel-bar be-y ing supported in the back-stop 13. 'forward end of the mandrel-liar isthe plug if which is adapted to engage the mandrel in thc ordinary manner, said mandrel having tho rcduccd projecting portion 1G extending bevond said lblug.
The pit 17 is formed below the floor-level and within Said )it arc arranged tho cylinders itt at Suitable intervals. Connected to th(- piston-rods 1'.) lart` the cross-heads 20. (iuidc rods 2l are connected to the crossbrad and said Pomidc rods extend down through `fuidmplateri Q2 which are bolted to tho lad-plates 23. Scout-ed to the crosshcml .20 is the yoke 2l which carries at it upper cud the rollers 25. These rollers .25 aro mounted on the stub-shafts 26 formina port of the hubs 27. These hubs 27 are mounted to turn on the shafts 28, said shafts passing.' through thcl bifurcated ends 2f) of thc, volto 24. lhe hubs 27 have the projectini,r portioml 3l) which are adapted tn engage the shoulders :fil on the yokes 24 to hold the rollers Q5 in tho proper position.
'hcn m improved a partitura` is in use thc tubular hlanlc 32 in the trough 6 is carricd by the pusher l() into the pass of the rollol uml orar thc plug 15 onto the mandrelbnr 15.'. Au `eoon as the puaher t() has pushed tbc tuhc through thc rolls. the gripper at the forward ond of the pusher 10 seizes the reduced ond portion 16 of the mandrel-bnr and thc cylinder 7 is operated .to withdraw tlu` pusher and the mandrel-harto the position indicated in Fig. 1. Just as soon as thcA mumlrol-har has.l been withdrawn, the motive fluid is admittcd to the cylinders 18 und thcl rollora 95 are lifted so as to lift the tubo 3E. from supporting frame 1'1. upon which il. remains a ttor the mandrel-liar has bocu withdrawn, and the. tubo is lifted hy tho rollers 2li to the position indicated in -tull lines Fig. l, or on a Ievel with the toproll The tube 232 is then pushed onto the top-roll which io moving in a direction to At the f spammenofnmmrmnf.
