DRUM-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented l\IIar..-1 2N, .1912.
".fvdnation filed May 11, 1911. Serial No. 626.535.
To all 'whom it may concern:
CJI
-such drum, .the construction being of such character 4that the heating element may -be readily withdrawn from the instrument or, if
desired, may be left in the instrument without danger of deterioration or without .spoiling the tone of the instrument.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention las applied to .an ordinary snare drum. 1
Figure l is a transverse section of the drum and applied heater; Fig. 2 .a partial axial section of the heater element', thetitting means of which it may 1" attached to a4 drum, andthe connecting@ einher by mel ns of which this heating elenient may be connectedto an electric circuit-faI "'.ln the drawings, 10 indicates a fitting or plate adapted to be securedwto the exterior Aof the main shell 11 of the drum, and this vplate carries a sleeve 12 which is internally threaded and hasV an external diameter such that it may be readily inserted. into the o1'- dinary vent opening 13 (or a slight enlarge ment Athereof) of the main body of the drum.
The heater element. comprises a main body y 15' having a knurled head 1G by meansof portion 17 adapted to fit the threads of the sleeve 12. Carried by the body 15 but insulated therefrom is a central core 18 which passes through an insulating sleeve 1 9.' A heating coil 20 is wrapped around this insulating sleeve and is connected' at one end to the central core and at the opposite end to the main body.
The fitting for connection to4 an electric circuit comprises an inner tube 21 adapted to receive the core of the heating element and an outer tube 22 fitting nicely into the receiving end of the main body 15, the bore 0f the main body being slightly tapered and van electric circuit.
the sleeve 2-2 correspondingly tapered. i The l end of the core 1S may be split so as to form a pair ot spring tongues 1n an ordinary manner so as to insure good electrical conshoved endwisc into the main body 15.
lVhen the heating element is in place nection when the connecting fitting is within a drum, it is, of cours'e, necessary to.
provide means for exhaust of the heated air from the interior of the drum and'for-l this purpose I perforate the plate 10 `at Vone 0r more points- 25 and registering perforations will be made through the body of the,v drum, the plate 10, however, forming a! neat externa'l'inish for these perforations.
It will be noted that the heating element may be readily placed and withdrawn, and
prising a'fitting plate lvada Y ed to be secured threaded perforation and "if vent perforation registering with a corresponding perforation in the body of the drum,'and :in-electrical heating element carried by said fitting plate, said heating element having terminals for connection with an electriccircuit and a threaded main body adapted to engage with the threaded ting.
2.' A heating attachment for drums comprising a fitting plate having a vented flange for attachment to the main bodyof .the drinn, and an electrical heating element carried by said fittingplate, said heating element having terminals for connection with 3. A heating atachmentkfor drums comprising a fitting "p ate having a ange for removable attachment to the body of the drum and a socket for holding heating element, one end of said socket being unflanged to portion of the tit ,because of the threaded connection with the supporting plate, itmay be left in placel to the main body of the dl 1n and having a permit its insertion into and removal from the drum body, and an electrical heating element removably mounted in said socket;
4. Thefcombination with a drum having a perforated portion,l`l of a heating attachment z' l A' comprising a'ttin f ange covering sai perforated Iportion and attached to the drum and a socket extending thro h said perforated portion, 'and an '5j electrlcal heating element removably mount- 1 ednsaid socket.'` Y.
5. 'lhecombinton -witha drum having a;
ment l"com rlsmg a fitting plate avng-a 10 perforate range .covering lsaid openings plate having :Lf-.vented l tion in said flange, and an electrical heating 4of said openings registering with a perforaelement "removably mounted in said soeket.
In vlWitness whereof, I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at ndanapo1is','1ndiana, this 1'5 day-of Apri 1,'A. D. one thousand nine hundred and eleven.
