To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS W. FLINN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Golden, in the county of J efferson and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Wood-Stave Conduits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for wood-stave conduits and its object is to provide a simple contrivance which, when placed between the abutting ends of two of the staves of which the conduit is composed, will render the joint between them impervious to fluid and strengthen the structure.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated, and in which Figure 1, represents a top view of a woodstave conduit with two of the attachments in the operative position, Fig. 2, a transverse section along the line 2-2 Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a section taken along the line 3-3 Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, a perspective view of the attachment.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the attachment consists of two plates 2 and 3 connected longitudinally at right angles to each other. The plate 2 is curved longitudinally to conform with the interior curvature of the conduit to which the attachment is to be applied, and the shorter plate 3, whose longitudinal edges are curved in conformity with the curvature of the plate 2, is erected upon the convex surface of the latter in a plane with its longitudinal axis and at equal distances from its ends.
The two plates may be made integral, or they may be attached to each other by riveting, in which case the flat plate 3 is provided at its concave edge with projections 3 to be inserted through corresponding openings in the curved plate 2. The plate 3 is furthermore provided with laterally and oppositely extending prongs 3 which are preferably formed integral with the plate by punching and bending V-shaped portions thereof.
The method of applying the attachment to a wood-stave conduit is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 of the drawings in which the reference numerals 4 designate, the staves of which the conduit is composed. When two of thestaves meet end to end the flat plate 3 of the attachment, whose length equals the width of the staves is placed between them with the curved plate 2 in engagement with the interior surface of the conduit. The staves are subsequently driven together to compel the prongs 3 to enter the wood at opposite sides of the plate 3, while the ends of the curved plate 2, extending beyond the ends of the plate 3, pro ject over the longitudinal edges of the abutting staves to render the joint strong and durable.
\Vhen the conduit is in use, the fluid pressing against the plate 2, will aid in maintaining the attachment in its proper position, and the latter thus serves as an effective substitute for the filling substances at present used to render the joints between the staves, water-tight and which are frequently displaced or disintegrated by the action of the fluid flowing through the concuit.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. An attachment for wood-stave conduits comprising an article of T-shaped cross section composed of two connected sheet-metal plates of dissimilar lengths, the shorter one of which is adapted to be inserted from the interior of a conduit, between the ends of two abutting staves thereof, and the other plate being curved to conform with the interior surface of the said conduit.
2. The combination with a wood-stave conduit of an attachment of T-shaped crosssection composed of two connected plates of dissimilar length, the shorter one of which is disposed between the ends of two alined staves of the conduit, its outer edge being flush with the exterior surface of the same, and the other plate being curved in engagement with the interior surface of the conduit.
