AssrGNon `:ro THE WESTERN Glas FIXTURE Patent'eanar. 12.1912.
Application led November 25, 1911. Serial No. 662,525.-
To all whom 'it may concern:
B'e it known that I, FREDERICK J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and have invented a certain new and useful Hickey; the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it to make and use the same, reference bemg had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
M invention relates to electric fixtures, and as for its primary object the provision of an improved form of hickey for use in connecting electric fixtures to the customary crow-foot or wall bracket or to an insulation joint in such manner as to protect the electricwires of the fixture and to permit of a quick and easy installing df the same.
The invention is fullydescribed in the following specification and a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side view of a side wall electric light fixture embodying my invention with parts in section and broken away. Figs. 2 and 3 are different views of the hickey comprising the invention, and Fig. 4 is a side view of a fixture equipped with the invention and' provided with an insulation joint.
' Referring to the drawings, l designates the hollow arm or stem of the ordinary .side wall electric fixture, 2 the hickey comprising my invention, which is shown in Fig. l as connecting the stem to the customary wall bracket or crowfoot 3, and in Fig. 2 as connecting to an insulating joint 4, and 5 the canopy.,
The hickey 2 comprises a short length of one end portion of which is externally threaded, as at 6, to adapt it to thread into the crowfoot 3 or insulating joint 4, as
the case may be, while the other end portion thereof is externally enlarged to provide a Ishoulder 7 at the inner end of the threaded portion 6, and is internally threaded to adapt a threading of stem therein. The threaded: end 6 of the lhickey is provided longitudinally thereof with -a slot 8, which extends into the enlarged portion of the hickey or beyond the and I do hereby declarethe inner end of the i shoulder 7 and has its inner end enlarged. This slot permits the wires 9, 9 to pass from the interior of the hickey andV attach to the lead wires 10, l0 at a side of the crow-foot or joint, as is well understood in the art. The wires 9, 9 are projected through the slot 8 before attaching the hickey to the crowfoot or joint and are intended to lie within' the enlarged inner end of such slot during a screwing home of the hickey. The provision of the shoulder 7 intermediate the ends of the slot 8 provides a positive stop for limiting the screwing home of the hickey, thus preventing a cutting of the wires or injury to the insulation thereof by reason of a pinching of the wires between the end of the slot and the part into which the hickey threads. This is a very important feature of my invention, as it prevents a short circuit at the point of projection of the wires from the fixture, thus adapting it to meet the underwriters requirements in this respect.
My improved hickey is found in practice to afford numerous advantages over the methods heretofore employed in the hanging of electric fixtures, as it enables the hanger to first screw up the crowfoot, independent of the fixture, then by means of the improved coupling or hickey the'fixture or bracket stem is screwed into-the crowfoot without a possibility of injuring the wires, making it unnecessary to have any more than barely room enough back of the canopy to make wire connections, thus doing away entirely with the long sliding room formerly necessary on fixtures of this character, which often destroyed the grace and beauty of the design. In addition to the satisfaction of being able to do a much better' job with the use of my improved hickey, the time saved edects a very considerable saving in the cost of hanging such fixtures.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
l.. A single-plece hickey-having its opposite end portions threaded and provided 1ntermediate its ends with a shoulder for limiting the threading of afixture part to one end thereof, such end having a longitudinally extending Wire-receiving slot therein which which has its inner end enlarged and term1- 10 terminates at its inner end beyond said nating beyond said Shoulder. Shoulder. In testimony whereof,l I have hereunto 2. A single-,piece hickey Ahaving its oppo- Vsigned my name tothis specification in the site ends threaded With at least one of such presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
