To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnome KINNIGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edna, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Cotton-Chopper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvementin cotton choppers.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the rotary chopper may be conveniently moved either laterally or vertically.
A further object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for driving the rotary cutting member.
In the draWingaHFigure 1 is a side elevation of the machine, Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
In the drawings, 10 designates the platform which is supported by the frame 11, the frame being mounted on the axle 12, said axle being supported by the drive wheels 14:. Arranged on the axle -12 is a pinion 15, which is thrown into and out of mesh with a pinion mounted on the stub shaft 14 by means of the clutch member 17. This clutch member consists of the sliding member 18 which is moved on the shaft by means of the pedal 19, the pedal seating itself in notches formed in a bracket 20, which is secured to the under face of the platform, the clutch being moved to the notch at 22, against the tension of the coiled spring 24 when it is desired to disengage the same. Supported by one of the transverse bars 25 and 26 of the frame is the stub shaft 14 which is connected by the universal coupling 15 with the shaft 16 on which the rotary cutter is mounted. Supported by the side rails 28 and 29 of the frame are the yokes 30, one of which is provided with the ball and socket joint 31, the lifting bar or shaft 32 passing through the ball of said joint, the bar thus being movable either vertically or laterally. This bar extends to a position adjacent the seat 3?, and is provided with a handle 34 by means of which the same may be manipulated. The bar rests on the semi-circular support 30, the arch or rein support 35 limiting the lateral movement of said bar, the arcli 35 being provided with stops 3G which prevent the reins from being displaced. 'lhe rod 37 is pivotally connected to the end portion of the bar or lever 32, said rod being connected to a hanger 39, which supports the end portion of the shaft 16. It will be noted that as the bar 32 is raised or lowered the shaft 16 will also be raised or lowered the operator in this manner regulating the cutting mechanism to allow for irregularities in the ground. The shaft 16 is mounted upon runners 1G', struts Ll0 which are disposed in pairs adjacent. the end portions of the runners supporting bearing blocks 4t2 which support the shaft 1G beyond the end of the cutting member, these runners participating :in the movement of the shaft 16.
The many advantages of a machine of this character will be clearly apparent, as it will be noted that the chopping mechanism may be conveniently manipulated, the various parts being such as may be easily and economically manufactured and readily assembled.
lVhat is claimed is t- 1. ln a cotton chopper, a frame, a drive shaft, a second shaft forming a continuation of said drive shaft and connected to same by a universal coupling, a cutting mechanism arranged on said second shaft, a plurality of arched supports arranged on the frame and over-hanging said cutting mechanism, an arm mounted for movement on one of said supports, said arm resting upon the other of said supports, a curved bar arranged on the last mentioned support, said arm extending through said bar, and a link connection between said arm and the free end of the second mentioned shaft.
