FIRE NOZZLE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 25, 1911 Patented Mar.5,1912.
coLum-"A PLANOGRAPH CLLIIWASHINCITON. n. 04
THOMAS ID. BRAIH, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
FIRE-NOZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
Application filed May 25, 1911. Serial No. 629,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. BRA'lI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at tochester, in the county of Monroe, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Nozzles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hose nozzles, and has for an object to provide a device of this character that may be passed through an opening in a floor, or ceiling, and will permit of the stream being selectively directed back along the nozzle for extinguishing fire in joists and the like, or may be directed laterally at a right angle to the nozzle.
With the above object in view the inven tion consists in certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that Various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification :--Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the nozzle embodying my improvements show-ing the bafiie dotted in the position it assumes for directing the stream laterally in a column from the nozzle. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the nozzle. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3"?) Fig. 1. Fig. 4c is a fragmentary view taken on the line it- 1 Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the couplings.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a hose nozzle having an internally threaded flange 11 at one end for the reception of a fire hose or similar coupling. (Not shown.)
Formed in one side of the nozzle near its discharge end is a circular opening 12 of approximately the same diameter as the bore of the nozzle, this opening being designed to permit of escape of the stream at a rightangle to the nozzle when the discharge end of the nozzle is closed by the hereinafter described bafHe. The battle consists of a concave shell 13 of greater outer diameter than the diameter of the discharge end of the nozzle, and this shell is provided centrally with a circular reinforcing disk 1a which is of less diameter than the bore of the nozzle. The baffie is equipped with spaced rods 15 which extend rearwardly along the sides of the nozzle and through openings 16 formed in a guide ring 17 which is rigidly secured to the outer face of the nozzle intermediate the ends of the latter. The rear ends of the rods are threaded and equipped with couplings for slidably attaching the rods to the flange of the nozzle. Upon the rods being drawn rear-wardly, the baflie is moved up into engagement with the discharge end of the nozzle, and in this position of the parts, the stream from the nozzle is directed laterally through the discharge opening 12. Upon the rods being shoved forwardly, the battle is moved outwardly from the nozzle to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and directs the stream in a substantially conical column rearwardly along the nozzle, the base of the conical stream contacting with the floor beams, oists and the like of the floor or ceiling through which the nozzle is passed and effectively quenching fire therein. The reinforcing plate ld enables the battle to withstand the pressure of the column of water directed against it.
The couplings above referred to, are each formed of Y-shaped links 18 the shanks 19 of which are hollow and internally threaded to receive the threaded end of the related rod. The branches 20 of each link are provided with elongated slots through which a suitable bolt 21 is passed, the head of this bolt engaging the outermost branch and preventing escape of the coupling while at the same time the coupling may move longitudinally upon the bolt, the movement of the coupling being limited by contact of the bolt with the ends of the slots in the branches. The ends of the branches are connected by a pin 22. An arched bail 23 is provided with terminal eyes which are inserted between the branches of the couplings and encircle the pins 22. This bail permits of the rods 15 being manually slid back and forth upon the nozzle to effect the desired adjustment of the baffle.
What is claimed, is
1. A nozzle having a supplementary discharge orifice near its discharge end, a concave baffle confronting the discharge end of the nozzle, rods slidingly fitted on said nozzle and operating to move said battle relatively to said nozzle, and means for mansaid rods to said nozzle, and means for n1an 10 ually actuating said rods. ually actuating said rods.
2. A nozzle having asupplementary dis- In testimony whereof, I affix my signacharge orifice near its dlscharge end, a conture, in presence of two Witnesses. 5 cave bafiie confronting the discharge end of said nozzle, rods extending longitudinally of THOMAS BEAT}? said nozzle and operating to move said bafiie Witnesses: into and out of contact with the discharge H. G. HUTcHINsoN, end of said nozzle, means slidably attaching A. J. MEYER.
