Description
Z7 ew inw were fifi tnted gime gebaut dtiiiite Letters Patent No. 101,933, dated April 12, 1870.
-*0m*- IMPROVEMENI.l IN LUBRICATING- AXLE-BOXES.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
lo all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS S. SPEAKMAN, of the city and county of Camden, in the State'ot N ew Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricating Axle-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, sutieient to enable others skilled in the class to which nay-invention appertains to fully understand and construct the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawingsv which make part of this specificittion, and in which- Figure 1 is a partially sectional end view of my improved lubricating axle-box.
'Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section of the samein line x x, tig. 1; and
Figure 3 is a detached view of the lubricating-enp or vessel.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in the arrangement'to the lower half of an axle-box, and to its under side, a vessel to contain a lubricatingcompound which is brought to the axle by being drawn up through a wick.
In the drawings- A re resents the upper half, and
B, tl e lower half of an axle-box, which is the bearing of a shaft or axle, C.
Through the lower half B of the axle-box passes an opening, b, heilig provided wit-h a female screw-thread, into which the male screw-thread, on the neck of the lubricating-vessel D, (its.
This neck l is formed on a ange, c, on the top of the vessel D, so that, when the vessel is placed in propel' position in the lower halt' 1 3 of the axle-box, its i top, being provided with a small opening, e, will be a K short distance from the under side of B.
A wick, E, passes from the vessel D,through its neck (l and the opening b, bearing against the under side of axle C, which is thus lubricated, the compound being, by capillary attraction, drawn upwardly toward the axle.
The great advantage of my device is its simplicity, a-s the vessel D can easily be removed for the purpose of cleaning or filling, and no waste is occasioned, as the eompound'is supplied to the axle only as it supplies the quantity actually used up. VIn long bearing, two or more vessels D may be used.
I am well aware that lubricating by capillary attraction is very old, and this I do not, therefore, claim; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as my invention, is
The lubricating-vessel D, provided with flange c, screw-neck (I, and opening c, in combination with the screw-opening b in the under half B of the axle-box, when used substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS S. SPEAKll'IAN. Witnesses:
M. B. TAYLOR, E. J. LORAIN.
