To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW V. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arms for Supporting the Nose-Grips of Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to eye glass mountings and it has particular relation to the arms upon which the nose gripping members of a pair of eye glasses are supported.
I have shown my invention as applied to the arms of eye glasses, usually characterized or designated as finger piece eye glasses, but it should be understood that it is intended to be and is applicable to other forms of construction in which the arms for supporting the nose grips are not pivotally mounted.
Generally I prefer to construct the arms and the nose grips separately and to secure them together in any manner desired which may be practicable, but they may be integral.
()ne of the objects of my invention is to provide a construction of arm which is capable of adjustment in all directions thereby providing what may be termed universal nose gripping members; that is, nose gripping members which may be adjusted to any position necessary to cause them to fit accurately the nose of a wearer. The construction of the arm is such that it may be cheaply and economically manufactured; and also such that, in the form of construction which I now prefer, it may be placed upon the market as a separate article of manufacture, independent of the other parts or elements of a complete mounting; and may be used either in the construction of new eye glasses or for the purpose of replacing an old arm or lever in repair work.
In the form of construction in which the arm and nose grip are integral they may be manufactured and sold together as a separate article of manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be referred to hereinafter in the detailed description of my invention or will be apparent from such description.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood and comprehended, I have illustrated convenient forms of embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, but
it should be understood that changes in the the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of an arm embodying my invention and having an extension of the forward end thereof by means of which the same is operated to place the eye glasses upon and remove them from the nose of a wearer. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same, the
several parts or sections of the. arm being adjusted so as to position them in the same vertical plane; Fig. 5 is a similar view with the parts of the arm adjusted into different positions from that shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a view looking toward the left in Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line corresponding to that on which Fig. 2 is taken but showing a modified construction; Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 showing another modification of the construction; and Fig. 9 is a similar view showing still another modification of the construction.
Although I have illustrated my invention as being employed in connection with a rim-.
less eyeglass it will be obvious that it may be used in connection with eyeglasses provided with rims.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 7 of the drawing, 1 designates a lens and 2 the straps secured thereto by means of a screw 3 in a known manner. The straps are provided with projections 4: which extend in opposite directions therefrom along the edge of the lens and operate to prevent pivotal movement of the lens about the screws 3. 5 designates the bridge of a pair of eye glasses, the ends of which are connected to straps 2 in a known manner. The arm 6 for supporting the nose gripping member 7 is pivotally secured to the end of the bridge 5 by means of the pivot screw 8. In order that'thearm 6 maybe turned about its pivot for the purpose of placing the glasses upon and removing the same from the nose of a wearer, I'have provided the finger piece 10 which is formed by an extension of the said arm 6 forwardly and outwardly from the pivot 8. The arm 6 is provided with a projection 11 which is engaged by a spring 12, which holds the arm 6 and the nose gripping member 7 inwardly in position to grip the nose of the wearer and secure the eye glasses thereon.
It will be understood that the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 7 are duplicated at the opposite end of thebridge 5 in each of said constructions. While the. arm 6 is illustrated as being located upon the top side of 10 the bridge 5, it will be understood that it may be located upon the underneath side thereof and that the location of the same with respect to the top or bottom side of bridge, or its manner of connection, whether directly or indirectly, thereto does not in any way aifect or alter my invention. The said arm, as illustrated in said Figs. 1 to 7 of the drawings, consists of the sections or parts 15 and 16 and in Figs. 1 to 6 the additional 20 part 17. The part 15 extends rearwardly from its point of connection to the bridge and in the drawing it is illustrated as extending downwardly but, as a matter of fact, said part or section 15 may extend in any direction rearwardly, as desired. The part 16 is extended forwardly from the rear end of the part or section 15 either in the same vertical plane as the part 15 or in any other plane to which it may be adjusted. It is obvious that the angle between the parts or sections 15 and 16 may be altered, as desired, either as to extent of angularity or as to position. The part 17 in Figs. 1 to 6, which may be said to constitute the terminal of the said arm, is of sufiicient length to extend through perforations 18 in ears 19 formed integrally with or otherwise secured to the nose gripping member 7. The distance apart of the said ears may be varied and if desired one of them may be omitted. The said nose gripping member is secured upon such section or part 17 by upsetting the end of the said part as indicated at 20 in Fig. 1.
The position of the part 17 with respect to the parts 15 and 16 may be varied as desired. The arm 6 as illustrated in Figs. 3
and 4 is, generally speaking, of Z-shape and the various parts orsections 15, 16 and 17,
of which the said arm is composed, may be adjusted in any direction with respect to each other whereby I secure a universal adjustment of the nose gripping member, so that it may be readily adjusted to fit the nose of any personno matter what its shape or configuration may be. I am also enabled by my invention to adjust the nose gripping members over or through a very wide range, which is a very desirable feature of construction.
It should be understood that the means of securing the nose gripping member to the arm, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, may be varied to suit the requirements andwishes of manufacturers and that my invention is not limited to the manner of connecting the nose gripping member to the said arm as is illustrated.
In the modified construction shown in Fig. 7 the part 16 terminates in the short bend or extension 32. The latter extends rearwardly through the lug or ear 19 situated on the anterior portions of the nose gripping members 7. The posterior ear or lug 19 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is omitted and the nose gripping members are secured to the arms by upsetting their ends, asshown at 84, against the ears or lugs on the anterior portions of the said members.
In Figs. 8 and 9 I have shown a modified construction in which the parts 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15 and 16 correspond to the parts similarly numbered in the preceding figures. In Fig. 8 the part 16 extends through the anterior ear or lug 19 from the posterior side thereof so that the arm shown in said figure includes one bend less than do the arms shown in Figs. 1 to 7.
In Fig. 9 I have shown a construction in which the forward end of the part 16 of the arm is integrally connected with the anterior edge of the nose grip 7 as shown at 18. In said Fig. 9 the arm isshown as being of flat metal and is twisted as indicated'at 51 so that the forwardly extending portion of said arm lies in a horizontal plane and is adapted to be supported above or below the bridge 5 as in the previous constructions described.
The adjustments in all of the forms of construction are effected by adjusting any one or all of the parts or sections of which 4 the arms in the several'forms of construction consists so as to change either the extent of their angularity with respect to each other or the positions of the planes in which the said parts lie or by twisting any one or all of the said parts in any direction desired. Also by changing the positions of the bends in the arms the nose grips may be adjusted transversely of, that is, toward and from, the plane of the lenses of a pair of eyeglasses.
While I prefer to construct the finger pieces 10, integral with the arms it will be understood that such parts may be constructed separately and secured to the said arms or may be secured otherwise to the pivots for the purpose of operating the said arms. be understood that my invention is not limited to a construction in which the arms for supporting the nose gripping members are pivoted but is equally applicable to a construct-ionin which the said arms are connected in fixed or substantially fixed position at points upon or adjacent to the opposite ends of a bridge of a pair of eyeglasses.
Although in the drawings I have illustrated the arms as being secured to the nose grips at points above their centers it should be understood that the point of connection between the arms and the nose grips is im- Moreover it is desired that it shall' material to my invention; also that the form or shape and construction of the nose grip are immaterial to my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. An arm of pliable metal for supporting a nose rest of a pair of eye glasses, the said arm being operatively connected to one end of the connecting means between the lenses of a pair of eye glasses and consisting of a part extending rearwardly from such point of connection and a part extending forwardly from the rear end of the first named part and a part extending rearwardly from the second named part, and a nose gripping member secured to the third mentioned part.
2. In a pair of eye glasses, the combination of the lenses, means for connecting the said lenses, arms having operative connection with the opposite ends of the said means, the said arms having parts which extend rearwardly and downwardly from their points of connection to the said means and also having parts which extend forwardly from the rear ends of the said rearwardly and downwardly extended parts and parts which extend rearwardly from the forward ends of the second named parts, and nose gripping members connected to the third named parts.
3. In a pair of eye glasses, the combination of the lenses, means for connecting the said lenses, arms for supporting the nose grips having operative connection with the opposite ends of the said means, the said arms extending rearwardly from their points of connection such distances as may be desired and being then extended forwardly and above the rearwardly extending parts, and nose grips having operative connection with the forwardly extending parts of the said arms.
4. In a pair of eye glasses the combination of the lenses, means for operatively connecting the said lenses, nose grips, arms for supporting the nose grips which arms have operative connection with the opposite ends of the said means and which arms extend rearwardly from their points of connection and being then extended forwardly and in a plane above the rearwardly extending parts and having connection with the anterior portions of the said nose grips.
5. In a pair of eye glasses, arms for supporting the nose gripping members each of which arms includes a straight part which extends rearwardly from its point of connection to a part of the eye glass mounting and which terminates in a bend and also a straight part which extends from said bend forwardly and in a plane above the rearwardly extending part and the forward end of each of said forwardly extending parts having connection with a nose gripping member to support the same.
6. In a pair of eye glasses, arms for supporting the nose gripping members each of which arms includes a straight part which extends rearwardly from its point of connection to a part of the eye glass mounting and which terminates in a bend and also a straight part which extends from said bend forwardly and in a plane above the rearwardly extending part and the forward end of each of said forwardly extending parts being bent laterally and inwardly and having integral connection with the anterior edge of a nose gripping member to support the same.
7. In a pair of eye glasses, arms of flat metal for supporting the nose gripping members, each of which arms includes a rearwardly extending portion having a twist therein whereby the front fiat portion thereof which is pivoted to a part of the mounting occupies a horizontal plane and the rear portion thereof a vertical plane, the latter portion terminating in a bend, and a portion which extends forwardly from said bend, which portion occupies a vertical plane and is integrally connected with a nose gripping member.
