'Appuction med April a, i911. serial No. 618,554.
To aZZ'wtom. t may concern.'
Be it known that'I, VTLLIAM B. BUssAnD,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at of double sealed cover whereby the vault when closed and l'sealed will `be absolutely air and water tight. Y
Another-object is to-provide an improved construction and arrangement of reinforcmg frames whereby a strong, durablecon struction is provided, said reinforcing vframes being made in adjustable sections for use inconnection with vault-sl of different lengt-hs.
With the above and other objects in view,
the inventionconsists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangementof Aparts as lwill be more fully del scribed and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved vault: Fig. 2 is a. vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view; Fig. 4
is a plan view of the body of the vault with the cover removed; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the inside of the cover; Fig. 6 is a side view of thereinforcing frame for the .body of the vault; Fig. 7 is a similar view ofthe reinforcing member for the cover of the vault.
M y improved vault comprises a body portion`1 which may be of any suitable size and shape and which has formed on its outer sides a continuous oset cover supporting flange 2, the lower side of which is formed on an angle or inclined as shown. ln the upper flat surface of the flange 1s formed a continuous sealing groove or channel 8. The' upper portion of thc body 1 above the ange 2 has itsA outer side; preferably tapered or 'inclined inwardly toward the upper edges thereof as shown, whereby the cover is more readily engaged with said upper portion of the vault body. Itwill be noted that the,
portion of the vault above the flange 2 is approximately one-third of the entire height I of th'e vault, said extended upper portion of the vault thus entering a considerable distance into the cover when the latter is applied thereto and thereby forming a close tightclosure for the vault..
Adapted to be' engaged with the body portion of the vault is a cover 4, said cover having ont-he inner sides of its lower edges ar continuous tongue or bead 5, 4which is adapted 'to enter the groove 3 formed in the upper side, of the fiange 2. 1T he lower edges of the cover when thus arranged rest on or engage -the upper edges of the flange 2-as shown.' In the cover at the upper portion thereo'r` is formed a right angular offset 6 around the inner side of which is secured a metal strip 7, lthe lower edges of which' project a. slight"A distance below the offset 6 and are bent, inwardly to a slight exte'nbas shown. The edges ofthe strip when thus projected below the offset 6 form between 'themselvesand the inner side of the cover a continuous sealing groove or channel 8 with which the upper edge of the "aultbody is engaged when the cover is placed thereon. ln the grooves or channels 3 and v8 is arranged a plastic sealing composition 9, which when the cover is placed on the vault is pressed between Athe contacting surfaces oi vthe cover and body thereby forming a double water tight seal or connection between the cover and the vault..
Arranged in the body portion of the vault when the latte'r is formed is a reinforcing frame 10 which is preferably formed of Aexpanded metal orhea'vy wire netting and is dnstructed in adjustably connected overlaping or telescoping sections which are adapted to be drawn apart or pushed toget-her to a greatervor less extent for vaults ofv diii'erent lengths. j The upper edges of the overlappingportions of the frame-arev covered and held together by binding' strips 11 which maybe secured to the edges of the frame in any suitable manner. VAround the 'upper edges of the frame is also arranged a binding wire 12 which is fastened to the edge in any suitable manner. On the outer sides of the reinforcing frame is adinstable to different heights on the fltme an outwardly extending flange 13 and a second 11'` i' and projecting 'above the upper side of'thfe flange 13c which is preferably bound around loops 18 with which are adapted to be -enor vault into the grave. 'ofv the vault is preferably made'absolutely principle, or sacrificing any ofthe advanits outer edges by a binding rod or wire 14. The flanges 13 and 13x are provided to reinforce the cover supporting flange 2 of the vault body. 'In the cover 4`is also arranged a reinforcing frame -15 constructed ofexpanded metal or similar material and formed in adjustably engaged sections in the same manner as the lower or bodyA reinforcing frame 10. The engaging or overlapping edges of the inner ends of the frame sect-ions have preferably engaged therewith binding plates 16 and around the lower edge of the reinforcing sections` 15 is also preferably secured abind-ing rod or wire 17, said rod or wire and the binding wires 12 and 14 of the body reinforcing frames being preferablyforrned in5ections.
The upper surface or body of the cover 3 of tbe vault is nreferablv rounded transversely and has itsy` posite ends formed atA an angle or inclinedas shown. Inlthe cover same is preferably'arranged strap receiving gaged suitable straps fori lowering the cover The innersurface water and air tight and acid proof by'xneans of a sealing composition applied thereto. l
From the foregoingdescription taken in connection with the; accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention willl berend-ily understood Wit-hout requiring a more extended' explanation.
Various changes in the form proportionand the minor details of construction may be resorted toV Without departingV from the tages of the invention as defined in the ap! pended claims.
ing tongue adapted to enter the groove in said flange, an offsetformed on the inne:` side ofthe cover, a metallic strip arranged around and'projecting below said offset and having its lower edge bent inwardlyat an inclination, thereby forming a continuoussealing groove or channel adapted to receive the upper edge of the extended upper portion of the body Aof the vault whereby said cover is doubly sealed.
2. A 'reinforced concrete burial vault comprisirig a body provided with a cover snpporting flange, a main .metal reinforf-ing framecomposed of overlapping sections embedded inthe body and slidable upon each,
other whereby the frame is adjustable, and a separa-te frame piece havinga horizontally projecting flange extendin from the frame into the cover-supporting ange and adjustable to differentvheights on the main frame. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand 1n presenceof two subscribing wit`- nesses.'
