sites to make and use the some.
lhe presentinvention relates to baseball and has for its purpose to provide s in addition to its usual qualities, ortionlerly adapting the -.ssme to and wherein the bet is in no more ode interior to the ordinary bsselodll "l3 he invention has for its further purpose to devise a means whereby any ordinary baseball bat may be equipped With the proposed improvement; and wherein such inreinent Will not increase the cost of the o any appreciable amount.
W these and other objects in view the lure HUT! consists in the novel details of eonstruotion and combinations of parts more fully oereineit'ter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Rotor-ring to the accompanying drawings forming a port of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views :-Fip,ure 1 is a perspective View of s ln sebnll but embodying the present invenlion. Fig. 2 is a. longitudinal elevetionel riew thereof, showing the manner of attac 1- inn' the non-resilient element, and 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the non-resilient element in position.
Referring to the construetio'n 1n dot-ell, 1 designates on ordinary baseball bat; having the striking portion 2 thereof provided with e plumllty of slots 3 that extend entirely through said portion 2,, and are disposed lengthwise thereof. The slots 3 are formed by sowing the striking portion 2 of the bot From the heavier end toward the gripping portion, as will be readily understood." A plurality of non-resilient strips 4L are in sertcd in the slots 3 for the full dimensions of the latter, and the exposed edges thereof are then trimmed to the contour oil. the bull striking portion 2. The strips t are then secured in position through. the medium of a peg: or pin 5, which is dri ven through a. suitable upcrtmfe, inlhe manner indicated in Figs. 2 end 3. The non-resilient strips l may be made of any suitable material, such, for instance, as closely compressed fibrous sheets.
A baseball but constructed above de scribed, and employing cardboard as the non-resilient medium, has been throughlsctool use found to be highlysatisfactory. In using the some with the plane oi the non-- resilient element presented to strike the bell, the resultant reaction willibe considerably deadened, thus particularlysdepting a hat or this type for hunting; and. when the hell is struck While the resilient strips ere presented edgewise thereto, the resultant read tion is substantially the some as that obtained with an ordinary bet.
lt is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
l l het is claimed is: t. The combination Wltl'l a bet havin a slot in the striking portion thereof, 0' e,
non-resilient element located therein, for the purpose set torth.
2. The combination With a bet having" a slot in the striking portion thereof, of a strip oi non-resilient material located therein, for the purpose set forth.
3. The'cornbinntion With a. bat hevin' a slot in the striking portion thereof, 0 a strip of non resilient material locstedtherein and disposed transversely and lengthwise thereof, for the purpose set forth.
4:. The combination with a bat having a slot, or e strip of non-resilient material loouted therein, said strip embodied in the striking portion of the bat and (so-extensive in Width and lengthwise thereof, for the purpose set forth.
The combination with a but having a plurality of slots in the striking portion thereof, of strips of non-resilient materiel located therein and disposed transversely and lengthwise thereof, for the purpose set forth. v
G. The combination with a but, oi a strip of non-resilient 1nd rial embodied therein, said strip disposed transversely and lengthwise or the bot s r king portion; and a pin scouring said strip in position, substantially as described. I
'Z. The combination "with a bet provided with a plurality of slots disposed transversely anal lengthwise oi the striking por tion thereof strips of non-resilient material tightly fitting within said slots; and .a pin securing said strips in position, substantially as iesoribeCl.
8. The combination with a bat provided with a plumiity of parallel slots disposed transversely and lengthwise of the striking 10 portion thereof; strips of fibrous material tightly fitting within said slots; and a pin passing through the bat and securing said 1 strips in position, substantially as descriheci. In testimony whereof, I afix my signa ture, in presence of two Witnesses.
