To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HA'imY E. GILBERT, of Conshohocken, in the State of Pennsyle vania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My improvement relates to burners adapted to be embodied in a water heater in connection with a house supply system and capable of consuming a gas the combustible element of which is gasolene vapor.
It is characteristic of the commercial carbureters, by which such gas is produced,
that the latter is extremely variable in pres.
sure, quantity and combustibility, and consequently, burners adapted to consume ordi my gas at substantially uniform pressure are practically useless for the purpose herein contemplated, because the flame is blown out and extinguished thereat by any sudden increase in pressure, and decrease in pres sure causes the flame to flash back through such burners to the gas inlet and sometimes through the latter to the carbureter. Moreover, an essential feature of such a heater being a water tank or boiler extending over the burner, the moisture condensed from the atmosphere upon the inner surface of said tank or boiler drips upon the burner.
Therefore, it is the object of my invention to provide a burner which is not only capable of maintaining gasolene vapor ignited when the pressure thereof is suddenly increased, and capable of preventing the back flashing of the flame through the burner, but also capable of preventing the extinguishment of the flame by water condensate falling upon it as above contemplated. As hereinafter described my invention in cludes the combination with a cylindrical burner tip tube containing a foraminous screen formed of a corrugated strip of sheet metal coiled with a plane strip of sheet metal; of a shield at the outlet end of said tube comprising a disk and a standard in concentric relation therewith; said disk and standard being a unitary piece of molded silica; and, means connecting said shield with said screen comprising a flexible wire molded in said standard, extending through said screen and engaged beneath the latter. My invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.

' In the drawings; Figure I is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of a water heater, including a burner embodying my invention. Fig. II is a plan view of the burner shown in Fig. I. Fig. III is a vertical sectional view of said burner, taken on the line III, III in Fig. II. Fig. IV is a side view of one of the burner tips shown in Figs. I, II and III. Fig. V is a vertical sectional view of the burner tip shown in Fig. IV. Fig. VI is a plan View of the burner tip shown in Figs. IV and V, with the shield removed.
In said figures; the gas supply pipe 1, leading from the carbureter, has the valve 2 controlling the admission of the gasolene vapor to the mixing chamber 3 in the burner body 4. Said body 4 has the air inlets 5 controlled by the adjustable shutter 6 at its base, and has at its upper end the horizontal head 7 including the group of burner tips 8 forming the main burner. Said burner is inclosed by the casing 9 which conveniently forms the outer wall of the tank or boiler having the annular water chamber 10, having the central flue 11 through which all of the products of combustion arise from said burner and heat the tubular fittings 12 through which the water 14 is circulated by way of the central pipe 15. Said burner head 7 has the central opening 16 extending radially to the edge thereof to detachably engage the sleeve 18 which is longitudinally adjustable on said central pipe 15 and may be secured in adjusted position by the set screw 19 so as to support said burner by the shoulder 20 of said sleeve extending beneath said head. Below the bottom edge of said casing 9 said burner body 4 is provided with the offset 22 having the pilot jet orifice 23 in its top, at the edge of said head 7 but below the level of the burner tips 8 therein, so as to be accessible from the exterior of said casing 9, although the products of combustion and heat therefrom arise within said casing and pass thence through said flue 11.
It is to be understood that when it is desired to operate said heater, the shutter 6 being properly set, the valve 2 is opened to admit the gasolene vapor to the mixing chamber 8 where it is mixed with air entering the inlets 5 and the combustible mixture is thus supplied in common to the main burner tips 8 and to the pilot burner jet 23. Said auxiliary burner 23 may then be lighted by a flame, conveniently from a match held exterior to said casing 9 and the flame from it then lights the main burner 8. Of course, when said valve 2 is shut, the flames of both the main and pilot burners are extinguished and said burners rendered inoperative until said valve is reopened and the burners relighted as described. As shown in Figs. IV to VI inclusive, each of said burner tips 8 comprises a cylindrical tube 25 having a screw thread 26 fitting a hole 27 in the plate 28 which is primarily separate from the burner head 7 but is hermetically sealed therein by cement 29 as indicated in Fig. III. A corrugated strip of sheet metal 30 wrapped in an involute coil with a plane strip of sheet metal 31 is tightly fitted in each of said tubes 25 as shown in Figs. V and VI thus forming a foraminous screen with interstices of such length in proportion to their diameters that the flame will not flash back therethrough when the gas pressure is suddenly diminished as above contemplated. Each of said burner tips 8 is provided with a shield 34 having a standard 35 in concentric relation therewith. Said shield and standard being preferably formed in unitary relation, of molded silica, said standard is provided with the metallic stem 36, conveniently a copper wire molded in said standard, which being extended through said screen, in concentric relation with the tube 25, is clenched beneath said screen so that said shield is maintained in rigid relation therewith although when broken it may be readily removed by straightening out said stem 36. I have found it practically necessary to construct said shields and standards of refractory material such as silica because when made of metal or other material susceptible of corrosion or erosion by the combined action of flame and moisture they are destroyed so quickly as to render such burners commercially undesirable.
However, I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement hereinafter set forth as various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A gasolene vapor burner comprising a cylindrical tube a foraminous screen formed of a corrugated strip of sheet metal coiled with a plane strip of sheet metal in said tube; a shield at the outlet end of said tube comprising a disk and a standard in concentric relation therewith; said disk and standard being a unitary piece of molded silica; and, means connecting said shield with said screen, comprising a flexible wire molded in said standard extending through said screen and engaged beneath the latter.
2. A gasolene vapor burner comprising a cylindrical tube; a foraminous screen formed of a corrugated strip of sheet metal coiled with a plane strip of sheet metal in said tube; a shield at the outlet end of said tube comprising a disk and a standard in concentric relation therewith; and, means connecting said shield with said screen, comprising a flexible wire molded in said standard extending through said screen and engaged beneath the latter.
3. A gasolene vapor burner comprising a cylindrical tube; a foraminous screen in said tube; a shield at the outlet end of said tube comprising a disk and a standard in concentric relation therewith; said disk and standard being a unitary piece of molded silica; and, means connecting said shield with said screen comprising a flexible wire molded in said standard extending through said screen and engaged beneath the latter.
4. In a gas burner, the combination with a horizontal head, bifurcated by a central opening extending to the edge thereof, and having a plurality of gas jet orifices at the same level in its top; of a foraminous screen in each of said orifices; a deflecting shield at the outlet end of each of said orifices, including a disk and a standard in concentric relation therewith, formed of refractory material; an auxiliary pilot gas jet orifice, intermediate of the bifurcations of said head, at one side of the latter and at a lower level than said plurality of gas jet orifices; said pilot jet orifice being inclined with respect to the other orifices; a tubular body depending from said head, at one side thereof, intermediate of said bifurcations and in registry with said pilot orifice, inclosing a mixing chamber having an air inlet; a valve controlling said air inlet; a gas supply pipe in connection with said mixing chamber; and, a valve controlling said pipe.
5. In a gas burner, the combination with a horizontal head, bifurcated by a central opening extending to the edge thereof, and having a plurality of gas jet orifices at the same level in its top; of a deflecting shield at the outlet end of each of said orifices, including a disk formed of refractory material; an auxiliary pilot gas jet orifice, intermediate of the bifurcations of said head, at one side of the latter and at a lower level than said plurality of gas jet orifices; said pilot jet orifice being inclined with respect to the other orifices; a tubular body depending from said head, at one side thereof, intermediate of said bifurcations and in registry with said pilot orifice, inclosing a mixing chamber having an air inlet; a valve controlling said air inlet; a gas supply pipe in connection with said mixing chamber; and, a valve-controlling said pipe.
6. In a gas burner, the combination with a horizontal head, bifurcated by a central opening extending to the edge thereof, and
having a plurality of gas jet orifices at the same level in its top; of a deflecting shield at the outlet end of each of said orifices; an auxiliary pilot gas jet orifice, intermediate of the bifurcations of said head, at one side of the latter and at a lower level than said plurality of gas jet orifices; a tubular body depending from said head, at one side thereof, intermediate of said bifurcations and in registry with said pilot orifice, inclosing a mixing chamber having an air inlet; a gas supply pipe in connection with said mixing chamber; and, a valve controlling said pipe.
7. In a gas burner, the combination with a horizontal head having a plurality of gas jet orifices at the, same level in its top; of a deflecting shield at the outlet end of each of said orifices; an auxiliary pilot gas jet orifice, at one side of said head and at a lower level than said plurality of gas jet orifices; a tubular body depending from said head, at one side thereof, in registry with said pilot orifice, inclosing a mixing chamher having an air inlet; a gas supply pipe in connection with said mixing chamber; and, a valve controlling said pipe.
8. In a gas burner, the combination with a horizontal head, having a plurality ofgas jet orifices at the same level in its top; of an auxiliary pilot gas jet orifice, at one side of said head and at a lower level than said plurality of gas jet orifices and inclined with respect thereto, so as to direct a flame therefrom over the edge of said head; a tubular body depending from said head, at one side thereof, in registry with said pilot orifice, inclosing a mixing chamber having an air inlet; a gas supply pipe in connection with said mixing chamber; and, a valve controlling said pipe.
