Description

waited tatt @met @fitte Letters Patent No. 101,877, dated April 12, 1870.
IMPROITEMENT IN MOLDS FOR METALS.
ThekSchedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be lit known that I, JOHN W. HOLLINGSWORTH, of Mt. Vernon, in the county of losey and State of Indiana, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Molds for Metals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and `to the letters of reference marked thereon .which form a part of this specification.
The nature of `my invention consists in the construction of a device by means of which molten metal may be forced into a mold.
` In order to enable others skilled in the. nrt to which my invent-ion appertains to make and use. the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and
Figure 2, aV longitudinal vertical section of my device.
A represents the flask iu which the moldis formed of plaster and sand, or othersuitable material.
B is a cylinder opening into the flask A, and into which the fused metal is poured h v way of'v the funnel C.
D is thc handle to which the flask and cylinder are attached.
In the cylinder vl is a plunger. ll, operated by means of' a rod, G.
The operation is as follows:
The mold is formed inthe flask, with a gate opening from the mold to the inner mouth of the cylinder B; the plunger Eis now thrustin, and the machine placed in the fire until the flask, mold, and cylinder all assume a red heat.
The plunger is now withdrawn to the outer end of' the cylinder, and the melted metal poured into the cylinder at the funnel C. The plunger is now brought back or thrust in upon the melted metal within the cylinder, until the metal is forced through the gate.
into the mold, and every inteist-ice of the mold is filled,
The small perforations or holes tri around the upper margin of the upper half` of the flask A are for the introduction of small wires, during the formation of the upper halt' of the mold. Whe-u the mold is finished these wires are withdrawn, leaving vent-holes for the escape of airand surplus metal during the operation ot' pressing or plunging thc metal into the mold. 4
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The metal mold, constructed as described, and so arranged as to force the metal into the mold by mechanical means, substantially as set forth.
2. Tile flask A, cylinder B, funnel C, handle D, and
'iplunger E, all constructeth combined, and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. In testimony that I cla-im the foregoing as my own, I ailix my signatureI iu presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. HOLLINGSWORTH. Witnesses:
FRANCIS O. WRIGHT, FREDRICK W. STEIN.
