COMBINED TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 11, 1911.
Patented Feb. 27, 1912. Serial No. 648,690.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM VVILDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Urbana, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Tie and Rail-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful combined tie and rail fastener.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a novel form of rail fastener, in which there is involved simplicity and practicability.
A feature of the invention is the provision of a member counter sunken in a tie having angular plates slidable into position, for locking the rail in place.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
'In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective, of a rail tie, showing the application of the improved fastener as applied thereto, the same being constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail View of one of the fasteners, removed from the member which is embedded in the tie. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the members 3 and one of the rail clamping plates 14, showing the same ready to be re ceived by the member 3.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates a suitable tie, which may be constructed of wood, cement or any other suitable material. This tie, at each end is provided with a recess or depression 2, of considerable depth. Arranged in the recesses or depressions 2 are members 3,which consist of head portions 4, base portions 5 and the web connecting parts 6. The head portions 4 are centrally recessed as shown at 7 for the reception of the base flanges 8 of the rails 9. On each side of the recesses 7, the head portions are provided with trough like gutters or guides 10, the upper openings 11 of which are restricted, as shown. The bottoms of the trough like gutters or guides are provided with recesses 12, which form the shoulder 13. Arranged in the trough like gutters or guides are the rail clamping plates 14, the rear ends 15 of which abut against the shoulders 13, for holding the plates in contact with the rails. The tongue portions 16 of the rail clamping plates are of a width to snugly fit the restricted openings 11 of the trough like gutters or guides, while the bodies 17 of the rail clamping plates are just wide enough to fit closely between the walls 18 of the trough like gutters or guides. The shoulders 19 of the rail clamping plates engage the under surfaces of the overhanging flanges 20 of the trough like guides, so as to prevent upper displacement of the plates.
In securing the rails in position, the rails are first arranged in the recesses 7 after which the body portions of the rail clamping plates are slid through the trough like guides or gutters, with the tongues 16 passing through the restricted openings 11, until the tongues engage the upper surfaces of the base flanges of the rails, then the ends '15 of the bodies 17 are thrown in contact with the shoulders 13 of the recesses 12. By this arrangement the rails are held in position in the recesses 7 securely. Subsequently the members 3 are then dropped or embedded in the recesses or depressions 2 of the tie 1.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In combination, a tie, a member embedded therein and provided with a transverse rccess, a rail arranged in the recess, the member having trough like gutters, the trough like guides having recesses, one end of each recess of the guides constituting a shoulder, and rail clamping plates arranged in the guides and partly seated in the recesses thereof with the ends of the plates in contact with the shoulders.
