Sumner, in the county of .Chariton and I State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railway' Jit-s; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear; and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in metallic railway ties and bas for its principal object to provide a tie which is very simple in construction and ellective in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tie which is made in two sections, said sections being securely held in engagement with each other and which are prevented from any movement relative to each other.

Each vertical portion of the sections of the tie is provided upon its abutting surface with a longitudinally extending groove 13, said grooves being in direct ali-nelnent to form a channel through said tie. in order to securely retain the sections of the tie in the relation described a locking bar 14 is passed through the channel formed by the grooves 13. The locking bar It is provided upon one end with a book 15 which is adapted to engage the end of the vertical port-ion of one section of' the tie. Before placing the nut l7 upon the locking bar a washer 1H having an enlarged circular body portion is adapted to engage the. locking bar. It will thus be seen from the for oing description that the' invention provi es a tie which is extremely simple in construction and whichalso provides an efietive means for retaining the rails in position upon said ties.
Havin thus described the invention what is claime is:
A railway tie comprising angular abutv ting sections, the end of one section extendother section of the tie, the other rib being longer and adapted to engage the vertical portion of the last mentioned section of the tie, and means for holding said washer in position.
