BALING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed June 18, 1910, Serial No. 567,729. Renewed May .23, 1911. Serial No 629,061.
To all whom it may concern:
a citizen of the Unitedstates, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention-relates to an improvement in baling presses in which a movable platen is operated by any suitable actuating means.
The object of the invention is to provide a compound toggle by which I am enabled to obtain a greater leverage in raising the movable platen, and by which connection, the cost of operating the press is materially reduced. I
The invention consists in'certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :.Figure 1 is a View in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a similar View, partly in section,- to disclose the inner assemblage of parts; Fig. 3is a perspective view of one of the levers; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the arms; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the levers.
A represents the base, and 1, 1, are the uprights, to which a cross-beam B is connected at the upper ends thereof. Connected to the under side of the cross-beam is the upper'platen D. The lower platen C is provided with recesses 2, 2, in which are Ijournaled arms 3, 3. The outer ends of 8, and between the teeth grooves 9 are I formed, in which are received the rounded teeth or portions 4 of the arms 3, the inter-.
locking of the teeth of the arms 3 and levers 6 producing ajknuckle joint or connection. Slotted guide-plates 10, connected to the levers 6, extend upwardly, and extending through the curved slots 11 in the plates are pins 12, which pins are connected to.
the arms 8, these guide-plates insuring the proper meshing of the teeth of the arms and I levers. I
Standards 13 are mounted upon the base A, on each side of the press, and journaled in the standards are crank shafts 14 to which are connected arms 14, 14. Pivotally connected to the upper ends of the levers 6 are links 15, which links" are connected to the crank arms 14. Mounted upon each shaft 14 is a gear wheel 16. The gear wheels 16 are adapted to mesh with each other. A shaft 17 is journaled in the. standards, and mounted upon the shaft is a pinion 18 which meshes with one ofthe gear wheels 16. A pulley wheel 19 is mounted upon the shaft 17, which is adapted to be driven from any suitable source of power for operating the shaft17, causing thegear wheels 16 to 'be operated.
Upon the rotation of the shaft 17, which causes the pinion 18 to be moved whereby the gear wheels 16 are rotated, the links 15 will be drawn inward toward each other,
causing the levers 6 to be raised. The upward movement of the levers 6 causes the arms 3 to move upwardly, which forces the lower platen C upward. The toothed faces of the arms 3- and levers 6 have a free engagement with each other, forming a bearing to allow of a rocking action. By reversing the pulley wheel 19, the platen G can then be lowered.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a baling press, the combination with a frame, of upper and lower platens, arms connected to the lower platen, levers connected to the frame, the faces of the arms and levers in free engagement with each other, forming a bearing to permit of a rocking action, and means connected to the levers for raising the platen. I I
2. In a b ling press, the combinationwith a frame, of upper and lower platens, arms connected to the lower platen, levers connectedto the frame, teeth on the arms and levers meshing to form a bearing, and means connected to the levers for raising the platen.
3, In a baling press, the combinationwith a frame, of upper and lower platens, arms other, forming a bearing to permit of a rocking action, crank shafts mountedon the frame, means connecting the levers to the moving the platen.
.5. In'a baling press, the combination with a frame, of' platens, arms connected to one of the platens, levers connected to the frame, teeth on the arms and levers meshing, links connected tothe levers, crank shafts on the frame connected 'toithe links, and means for operating the crank shafts for moving the platen.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
