Description

lnitrd ($13123 NASH OHEEK, OF CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA.
Lette/rs Pal-tent No. 101,822, dated .April 12, 1:870.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON AND TOBACCO-PRESSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thesaurus4 To all whomjt may concern:
Be it known that I, NASH CREEK, of Chapel Hill, in the county of Orange and State of North Garolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton and Tobacco Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification,
The natureof my invention consists in the construction and manner of operating presses for pressing cotton, tobacco, hay, or any other articles that need pressing.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I willnowproceed todescribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Flgure l is a side elevatiouof my press, and
Figure 2 is a front view of the follower.
A represents the box in which the articles to be pressed are placed.
' In this box the follower B moves up Vand down.
In the center of the follower' B is a bar, O, which, by means of a metal strap a, on each side is suspended from the front end ofthe lever D, this lever being notched'or hollowed out on the under side for the upper end of' the bar C to vfit in. lhe lever D is pivoted at a suitable point between two upright standards E, and its rear end passes between two guides G.
At or near the rear of the leverD is a mortise through the same, in -each. end of which is inserted and rmlysecured a block, 11, provided ou its outer face with ratchet-teeth, as shown in dotted lines in f1 .'1.
gAt the bottom or near the foot of the guides G, between two ears or posts d', is pivotedalever, H, which is provided on its upper side with two boxes ee, which are placed on each side of the pivot point and at equal distance from the same.
In each of these boxes is pivoted an upright sword, I, which, on its outer edge is provided with ratchetteeth.
rIhe two swordsI I pass upward through the mor tise in the rear end of the leveluD, andare pressed outward from each other by means of the spring J, so that theirteeth will engage with the. teeth on the blocks b b in said mrtise'.
'.Lhe operation of this press is very simple. The article to be pressed heilig placed in the box A,"one or more hands are stationed at each end of the lever H, and by working its ends alternately up and down, that is, giving the same a rocking motion, the teeth on the swords I I catch in the teeth on the blocks b b raising the rear end of the lever or beam D, which, of course, brings the follower B down, pressing the articles in the box A'.
beam D-provided with toothed blocks b b, bar C, and' follower B, all constructed as described, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
