Letters Patent No. 101.778, dated April 12, 1870.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making4 part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, HAMILTON Ennsrus SMITH, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Washing- Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingforming part of this specifica-tion.
- Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved washing-machine.
Figure 2 is a detail longitudinal section of my improved washing-cylinder.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresnonding parts.
-"'l`his invention relates to washing-machines, and consists in an improvement thereon which will be hereinafter specified. v
The partition, it will be seen, divides the cylinder Aiuto' two longitudinal chambers, of which each is provided with a suitable door or gate, (c, for inserting and removing the articles to be washed. The cylinder is thus not only divided into two separate washing apartments, but the washing surface also is almost doubled, and each apartment is of such shape `that the process is successfully carried on by merely revolving thc cylinder. The injurious oscillating motion is thus done away with.
During one half revolution of the cylinder, the clothes slide on the surface of the partition B, and are rubbed by the same. During the next half revolution the clothes are turned over and dropped upon the shell of the cylinder and agitated on the same by the current of water. The clothes are thus thoroughly agitated and will be properly cleaned.
The cylinder is hung in a suitable suds-box, C, and receives rotary motion by suitable mechanism.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A A perforated and corrugated washing-cylinder divided into two longitudinal apartments by means of a corrugated diametrioal partition, B, substantially as herein shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 3d dayl of March, 1870.
HAMILTON ERASTUS SMITH.
