IMPROVED STORE AND HOUSEHOLD' GRAPPLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l0l,772,`dated April 12, 1870; antedated March 28, 1870.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN SEL'rzEmf the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful instrument for withdrawing or removing fabrics or other articles fromv the windows of stores, and for affixing, suspending, or placing goods, wares, or merchandise in any elevated rated on its inner surface or have a V-groove near its extremity.
B represents a movable jaw, pivoted or otherwise fastened on the upright C, which rests on the jaw A. This movable j aw curves near its outer extremity into a flange-like projection, that fits into the Vgroove of the fixed jaw, and the jaw terminates in a bifurcated prong, a., to actuate a gas faucet or cock, and hold a match or taper to ignite the gas.
D is a spring,fwhich actuates the movable jaw and causes it to close when the spring is released from pressure.
E is a wire or rodfastened to the movable jaw near its inner extremity, and passing through` a slot and over a pulley in the fixed jaw, and extending along the handle for a suitable distance and terminating in a pull, knob, or slide, or other suitable device.
F represents a socket, forming the base of the fixed jaw, into which the handle G is inserted and secured by a screw, or otherwise fastened. On the inner surface of each jaw,
near the center, is a concave lug or shoulder, so formed, arranged, and constructed that when the movable jaw closes a bottle or anyfcircular article may be grasped, withdrawn, or handled in any manner desired.
The traction of the wire or rod E by the hand or fingers opens the movable jaw B, and, when the tractive power is removed therefrom, the action of the spring closes the movtremity, opposite the grapple, may be affixed or fastened a combined hammer, ice-pick, and tack-extractor. The hammer-handle forms part of the grapple-handle, to which it is secured by a band, socket, screw, or other device, and is so arranged that when a hammer is required the handle may be unfastened and separated from the grapplehandle.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the jaws A and B, the upright C, the spring D, the wire or rod E, the socket F, the handle G, the bifurcated prong a, and the combined hammer, ice-pick, and tack-eXtractor, or their several equivalents, arranged, constructed, and operatingin the manner and for the purposes substantially as described.
