Be it known that I, PETER HARDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willimantic, \Vindham county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ca'rding-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
My invention relates to improvements in carding machines, and particularly to an improvement upon the construction set forth in my former Patent No. 993,677, dated May 30,1911.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown in a single diagrammatic view an arrangement of parts such as is essential to an understanding of my improved construction.
1 represents the surface of a main carding cylinder.
2-2 represent so-called flats.
3 represents a lickerin roll.
4. represents a feed roll.
5 represents a lap roll.
6 represents a mote knife.
7 represents stock being fed from the lap roll to the lickerin 3.
8 represents a stripping cylinder.
9 represents card clothing on the surface of the latter.
10 represents a suction nozzle which constitutes one suitable means for removing impurities from the surface of the stripping cylinder 8, the form and construction of such means being immaterial.
11 represents a guard plate located between the feed roll 4: and that part of the surface of the stripping cylinder 8 which is most closely adjacent to the surface of the lickerin 3. The guard plate 11 is preferably curved to follow substantially the surface of the lickerin. I
The surface of the main carding cylinder 1 is provided with the usual card clothing and moves in the direction of the arrow. The surface of the lickerin 3 is of the usual toothed construction and moves in the same direction as the surface of the carding cylinder 1, but at a slower speed. The surface of the stripping cylinder 8 carries card clothing, and in this particular construction revolves in a direction reverse to that of the adjacent surface of the lickerin 3, but at a very much slower speed. l/Vhereas the surface of the lickerin roll 3 may travel ordinarily at a speed of, say, one thousand feet Specification of Letters Patent.

per minute, the surface speed of the stripping cylinder 8 may be only a comparatively few inches per minute, the purpose being to transfer from the combing point to the clearing mechanism 10 such waste as is gathered thereon.
In operation, the comparatively high surface speed of the stripping cylinder 8 would, in the absence of the guard plate, tend to throw the heavier waste and impurities outwardly to such an extent that said heavier impurities would be taken by the surface of the stripping cylinder 8 at a point substantially away from the .point where the combing action takes place. occur, it is obvious that much loss would occur, since more or less valuable stock would be taken off with the heavier impurities. To prevent this and to cause all of the stock carried by the lickerin to receive the combing action, I have provided means which will prevent any of the stock from being thrown off from the lickerin to the stripping cylinder 9 before said combing action takes place.
In assembling the parts, the surface of the stripping cylinder 8 is adjusted very closely to the surface of the lickerin, the line of division being preferably only a comparatively few thousandths of an inch. The guard plate 11 is so placed that the heavier impurities are held back by said guard plate and directed thereby into the space where the surface of the roll 3 and the surface ofthe cylinder 8 are in closest proximity, so that the aforesaid combing action will take place, even on the heavier impurities. It will, therefore, be seen that the guard plate performs a most useful function in holding the stock in place until all of it shall have received the combing action of the card surface 9 of the stripping cylinder 8.
hat I claim is:
1. In a carding machine, a main carding cylinder, a lickerin roll adjacent thereto, the adjacent surfaces of said cylinder and roll moving in the same direction, the former at a greater speed, a stripping cylinder carrying card clothing thereon, the latter being arranged closely adjacent to said lickerin roll, the adjacent surfaces of said roll and stripping cylinder moving in opposite directions, the latter at a very much slower speed than the former, and means for guiding the material on the lickerin to the space If this were permitted to Patented Feb. cc, 1912? between said lickerin roll and the stripping cylinder whereat the combing action of one relatively to the other occurs.
2. In a carding machine, a main carding cylinder, a lickerin roll adjacent thereto, the adjacent surfaces of said cylinder and roll moving in the same direction, the former at a greater speed, a stripping cylinder carrying card clothing, the surface of the latter being arranged closely adjacent to the surface of said lickerin roll and away from the surface of the main cylinder, the adjacent surfaces of the stripping cylinder and the lickerin roll moving in opposite directions and at substantially different speeds, the latter at a comparatively high speed, means for feeding stock to be cleaned to the lickerin roll and thereby to said main cylinder, and means to cause all of said stock to pass into the space between said lickerin roll and said stripping cylinder to receive the combing action of the latter.
3. In a carding machine, a main carding cylinder, a lickerin roll adjacent thereto, the adjacent surfaces of said cylinder and roll moving in the same direction, the former at a greater speed, a stripping cylinder carrying card clothing, the surface of the latter being arranged closely adjacent to the surface of said lickerin roll and away from the surface of the main cylinder, the adjacent surfaces of the stripping cylinder and the lickerin roll moving in opposite directions.
and at substantially different speeds, the latter at a comparatively high speed, means for feeding stock to be cleaned to the lickerin roll and thereby to said main cylinder, and means to cause all of said stock to pass into the space between said lickerin roll and said stripping cylinder to receive the combing action of the latter, said means comprising a guard plate arranged adjacent to that part of the stock between the feeding means and the space whereat said combing action takes place.
4-. In a carding machine, a main cylinder having card clothing on its surface, a lickerin roll arranged adjacent thereto, the surfaces of said cylinder and roll moving in the same direction, the former at a higher speed than the latter, a stripping cylinder carrying card clothing on its surface and arranged closely adjacent to said lickerin and spaced substantially away from said main cylinder, the surface of said stripping cylinder moving in a direction opposite to thatof the adjacent surface of the lickerin but at a very slow speed to secure a combing action on stock passing therethrough, and means for feeding stock to be cleaned into the space where said combing action occurs, said means serving to hold all of the stock to be cleaned adjacent to the lickerin roll as it approaches the latter and until said stock enters the space where said combing action between the stripping cylinder and said lickerin occurs.
5. In a carding machine, a main cylinder having card clothing on its surface, a lickerin roll arranged adjacent thereto, the surfaces of said cylinder and roll moving in the same direction, the former at a higher speed than the latter, a stripping cylinder carrying card clothing on its surface and arranged closely adjacent to said lickerin and spaced substantially away from said main cylinder, the surface of said stripping cylinder moving in a direction opposite to that of the adjacent surface of the lickerin but at a very slow speed to secure a combing action on stock passing therethrough, means for feeding stock to be cleaned into the space where said combing action occurs, said means serving to hold all of the stock to be cleaned adjacent to the lickerin roll as it approaches the latter and until said stock enters the space where said combing action between the stripping cylinder and said lickerin occurs, and means for removing waste gathered upon the card surface of the stripping cylinder.
