To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Homes G. JOHNSTON, a citizen .of the United States, residing at Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art. to which it appertains to make and This invention relates to rota well boring machinery and has for an ob ect to provide an apparatus for use in conjunction with the rotary machines especially a rotary such as is described in applicants Patent No. 959,351, issued May 24th., 1910 and when applied thereto for uncoupling easing tubes and other well pipes employed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pipe tong adapted to be carried upon and used by a rota machine such as described in said patent 0 such construction that it may remain upon and in association with said machine when not in actual use and in position to be quickly and readily moved r swung into position for operation when desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved pipe tong adapted to be pivot-ally mounted upon uprights carried upon the base of a rotar machine and. also upon the rotary table to be used in conjunc tion for unscrewing or disconnecting pipe sections.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel construe tions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The lever 19is provided at its end opposite the pivot 20 with a serrated face 21 while a 'jaw member 22 is pivoted to said lever as at 23 to grip the p1 e in the usual well known manner: The ormation of the hook shaped jaw member and the serrated face 21 and their co-action will be so apparent as to require no further planation or disclosure.
In use two of the tongs are mounted upon the uprights of the base and the rotating table respectively as shown at Fig. 1 and the rotating table started in the usual manner. Such starting of the rotary table moves the tong which is connected thereto and carried thereby and moves therewith the section of the pipe or the section of the coupling which it is gripping. The other tong which is held rigidly by attachment to the upright of the base holds the other pipe section against ro tation whereby the continued movement of the rotary table unscrews the parts. When the parts have been disconnected the tongs are readily and easily disconnected from the pipe or fromithe coupling to which they are connected and are swung around out of operative position either by swinging upon the pivo ts 20 or upon the uprights 13 or 15.
. In the drilling of large wells where the -casing is oftentimes from ten to fourteen inches the pipe tongs employed become of necessity very large and very heavy under ordinary conditions requiring several men to lift and place upon the pipe sections.
With the device as shown the tongs remain constantly in position and may be swun into operative relation with the pipe an connected up easily, quickly and readily by one man and without requiring a great degree of strength. The saving of time is also a ver important element.

The combination with a rotary well drilling machine comprising a stationary base and rotating table with uprights up standing from each, of collars surrounding the uprights and pipe tongs pivoted to the collars in such manner as to be supported by the collars and uprights in horizontal position.
