R. W. GLENN.
HOSE REEL.
APPLIOATIOB nun APR. 22, 1011.

RALPH W. GLENN,
0F FRUI'I'VALE, CALIFORNIA.
HOSE-REEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH W. GLENN, citizen of the United States, residing at Fruitvale, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hose-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hose-reel or drum and to the means by which the reel is rotated to wind a hose thereon.
It is common in hose-reels to mount the reel on a stand or framework of some sort, and then in winding the hose on the reel to ull the hose up to the reel.
Fhe underlying principle of my invention is to utilize an unsupported drum of special construction to which one end of the hose can be attached and then the drum run along the hose to Wind the hose about the drum; the unwound length of hose lying undisturbed on the ground. If desired, my drum can be held in the hands and rotated by the means hereinafter described so as to pull the hose toward the operator at the time of winding.
It is the object of this invention to p vide a hose-reel which is simple in construction, of light weight, economical in space and which can be manufactured and sold at small cost.
A further object is to produce a reel which is adapted to travel on the unwound portion of a hose when winding the latter on the reel, and in which simple means are provided by which the reel may be easily and readily rotated.
Another object is to so form the reel that the first layer of hose will wind in compact spiral arrangement and at the same time be securely retained on the reel and prevented from sliding from side to side thereon.
The invention consists of the parts and the combination and construction of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 1s a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line XX, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents an open ended metal drum of suitable length, the peripheral surface of which is corrugated with a continuous spiral groove 2. A perforation 3 is formed in the drum A at a oint adjacent one of the terminations o the spiral groove 2 through which the end of Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 22, 1911.

end riveted to the center of the bar 5 and extends at right angles thereto, the outer end of the bar 7 being bent to form a flange which is riveted to the drum; this bar 7 being provided for stiffening pur oses.
In order to facilitate the win ing up of a hose there ma be mounted on the o posite liar 5 a pair of hen -holds 8 8; the hand-holds 8 being disposed on one side of the axial line or center of the drum, indicated at Z, and the hand-holds 8 on the other side of the axial line Z.
In the application of this invention the end of,the hose 4 is secured in the perforation 3,1a-nd the hand-holds 88 are grasped in each hand. By giving an upward pull on one of the hand-holds and bearing down upon the other, as indicated by the arrows ab, Fig. 2, the drum A may be caused to have a rotary movement with its axial line Z, as the center of rotation, the hand-holds 8-8 moving concentrically in relation to the axial line Z, at all times. The rotation of the drum A in the direction of the arrow a, Figs. 12, winds the hose 4 in the spiral groove 2 thereon, the drum traveling on the hose as it is revolved by the handholds 88 where the weight of the hose is too great to admit of the reel bein held above the ground and supported 1n the hands.
Where the hose bein wound on the reel A is sufliciently light the reel may be held in the hands by the handles 88 and revolved; the handles then tending to move concentrically in relation to each other, thereb giving the drum an eccentric movement, y reason of the drum first revolving around one of the hand-holds as a center, then around the other.
When the hose 4 is wound in layers on the drum A, it is prevented from shifting sidewise by reason of the continuous rib separating the spiral groove 2 engagmg the hose 4 on each side of each spiral turn of the first layer.
The essential feature of this invention is a reel simply in the shape of a corrugated cylinder or barrel needing no support, which can be run along the ground, or held in the hands to Wind up the hose. By such a construction and making the drum of sheet metal I am able to furnish a hose-reel which is simple, compact, and costs but a trifle compared with the ordinary reels on the market.
Having thus I claim and desire ent is- 1. A hose reel consisting of a cylindrical shell having a circumferential spiral groove, and inner handles by which it may he manually raised and revolved free of other support.
2. A reel comprising in combination a drum having a continuous spiral groove formed on its outer eripheral surface, means for attaching a ose near one terminal of said spiral groove, and handles by described my invention, what to secure by Letters Pat- Oopies 01 this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the which the drum may be manually raised and revolved free of other support to Wind the hose in said spiral groove.
3. A reel oomprisng in combination a drum having a continuous spiral groove formed on its outer peripheral surface, means for attaching a hose near one terminal of said spiral groove, a bar diametrically disposed in said drum and attached at each end thereto, and a hand-hold mounted on each side of said bar, one of said handholds being situated on one side of the axial line of said drum and the other hand-hold situated on the other side of the axial line.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RALPH W. GLENN.
