Description
D. HARMON.
Dtohng Plow. No. 101,729. Patented April 12, 1870.
:LPETER PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHtNGTON. D 0.-'
fetrltt @with DANIEL HARMON, OF GOLES OOUN'lY,-ILLIN OIS.
Letters Patent No. 101,729, (lated April 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN DITomNG-PLQW AND Heben-GRADER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters-Patent and making part of the same To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL Hennen, of the county of Goles and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditchers and Hedge-Graders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing making a part ot'lths specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved device;
Figure 2 is a side elevation, and
Figure 3` is a'rear elevation of the same.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention is designed for making ditches; and
It consists, first, in the means employed for attaching the truck to the'plow-beam, and, in connection therewith, for regulating the depth of the furrow;
It also consists in the peculiar construction of the spreader1 whereby it can be adjusted to any desired width; and,
Finally, in the means employetb'or regulating the draft of the spreader.
In the annexed drawingo A represents theplow-beanr, having secured to and projecting downward from near its rear end an arm, B, to which the plow C, of` usual form, is attached.
Extending upward from the front and rear ends of vthe beam A are two bars, D and E, respectively, t0
the former of which is pivoted one end oi' a lever, F, that, extending rearward, is provided with a slot, f, having a suitable size to ,permit said lever to pass over the bar E.
The lever I*1 is pivoted, near its front-end, to or between the upper ends of two standards, G, which are secured within and extend upward from an axle, H, support-ed by means of suitable wheels, I, so that, by raising or depressing the rear end 'of said lever, the front end of the beam A is raised or lowered, and the depth of the ditch correspondingly varied.
Suit-able corresponding holes, c, being provided within the bar E and lever G, the latter is secured in position, when adjusted, by means of a piu, at, passing through both lever and bar, while the-relative positions, fore and aft, Iof the truck and plow-beam are secured by means oftwostay-rods, h, attached to the front end of said beam and to the axle H. l
Attached, by means of a hinge-joint, K, to the rear end of the land-side C', is a spreader,I consisting of 'a landside,-L, and mold-board, M, connected together at their `front ends by mea-ns of a curvedA rod, N rigidly fastened at one end to said land-side, and pivoted at itsvopposite end to said mold-board.
and aft, by means ot 'lwo wooden bars, 0, are pivoted to the moldboard, and extend inward, so as to overlap two metal bars, I), pivoted to the land-side, in which. position they are secured together and rendered relatively adjustable by means of pins p passing throughcorresponding holes, of which a series is-provided,within,1and extends horizontally through eachba'ry. y 1
The land-'side L'is formed ofa steel plate secured to and strengthened by means of wood, and has-projecting horizontally outward froml near its rear end a plate, i, which serves to hold said landfside steadily in position when in' operation A Extending upward from` the land-side L, nea-r its rear end, is a short standard, It, `towhich is pivoted one end oi' a bar, S, having upon its'opposite end a wheel, T. I. i
The axle or bar S extends inward,with the wheel l resting-upon the ground, and is 'held in place, fore axle, and to the front bar O. e Pivoted to the standardlt, byineans of the bolt s, used for securing thereto the bar S, is a second bar, U, which extends upward and across, and is rigidly attached tosaid bnr S by a brace, v\'.` n p A lever, W, is loosely connected at one end to the rear endV 'of tlc mold-board -M by a linkedrod, an., -from whence it extends forward, and issuspended from the outer end ofthe bar U byuneans of a chain,
1v, said chain `being eonnectedto said lever at a short distance forward from itsreae end.- f l It will `he readily seen that the'wheel Tserves as a fulcrum for the lever Q so'that, it' the front end of the latter bedcpressed, the mold-lmard M will be correspondingly raised. Y
As thus described, the machine is complete, is'en tirelyunder cont-rol of the operators, and may be quickly and readily adjusted, so 'as to form a ditch having any desired depth, width, or grade, and, being simple in construction, durable, andnot more expensive thau ordinary ditching-machines,it is believed that its introduction.will vprove a public bcnet.
I'Iaving thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention,
What I clailn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
lhe devices employed for connecting together and rendering relatively adjustable the plow-beam and truck, consisting of the bars I)v and E, the lever F, the divided or double standard G, and the stay-rods h, substantially as shown and described.
Also, the hcreinbetore-described spreader, consist-y ing ot' the land-side L and mold-board M, connected together and made relatively adjustable by means of the rod N andharst'l and' l?, substantially as set a rod, t, loosclyattached to said Also, the means employed for regulating the draft' Tir-testimony that I' claim the foregoing, I have of the spreader, consisting of the bar S, the wheel hereunto set my hand, this 8th day of December, T, the bar U, the brace V, and the lever W, all con- 1869. structed and arranged to operate substantially as DANIEL HARMON.' shown, and for the purpose described.
Also, the general construction and arrangement of Witnesses: the various parts of the hereinbefore-descrbed de- FRED. P. BASE, vice, substantially as and for the purpose specified. WM. J. XVILLSON.
