Description

R. W. BURNETT.
DUMP CAR DOOR.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 16, 1911-.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912:
COLUMBIA PLANDGRAFH CO-JNASHINGTDN. D. c.
FIE.
RICHARD WEBB BURNETT, OF MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
DUMP-CAR DOOR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD IVEBB BUR- NETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at No. 42,-The Linton, Montreal, Dominion of Canada, Province of Quebec, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Car Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to dump cars and particularly to means for closing and sealing the doors of dump cars.
The object of the invention is to provide a. door that will not leak, at its closing edge and in which the tendency of the load will be to tighten the seal.
In the construction of doors in dump cars hitherto the tendency of the load has been to open the door and cause leakage through the opening whereas with the present invention the load pressure cannot open the door but tends to make a perfect closure.
Reference is made to the annexed drawings in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a portion of the hopper bottom of a dump car. Fig. 2, is a sectional view of a locking mechanism adapted to a flush bottom dump car.
In the form shown in Fig. 1, C, is partof the center sill of the car supporting the hopper wall B. To this hopper wall B, is suitably hinged a door A, by means of a hinge A In the form shown in Fig. 2, the door A, is hinged directly to the floor of the car C and provides a flush bottom to the car when closed. The outer edge of the door A, has an edge portion A of suflicient width to match the lower flange of the sill D, of the car when the door is closed. Secured to the sill D, is the plate F, to which by means of a continuous hinge is hinged the angle plate E. This plate E, when closed fits close to the sill D, and its lower portion E supports the edge A of the 'door A. Suitable means of locking the angle plate E, when thus closed are provided. Such a means of locking the angle plate E, is shown in Fig. 2, where the bent lever G, is pivoted to the bottom of the door A, by the hinge G The lever when locked bears against the outside face of the angle plate E, and thereby securely seals the edge A of the door A. A bolt or catch G holds the lever in its locked position. Other forms of Specification of Letters Patent.

locking mechanism may be substituted for the bent lever G, without afl'ecting the mode of operation of this invention. From this construction it will appear that the load on the door A, will tend to press the edge A on the part E of the angle plate E, and make the contact closer.
Having now described the invention and its mode of operation, what I claim and de sire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a dump car door an edge adapted to meet the bottom of the sill of a car, and an angle plate hinged to the sill and adapted to close under the door edge as described.
2. In a dump car door, an edge resting against the lower side of a sill, a plate secured to the said sill, an angle plate hinged to such plate, and adapted when closed to support the door edge as described.
3. In a dump car door, the combination of a door hinged to a hopper wall, an edge adapted to meet the lower side of a sill, a sill, an angle plate hinged to the said sill and adapted when closed to support the edge of the door, and means to lock the angle plate when closed as described.
4. In a dump car door the combination of a door having an edge, a sill, an angle plate hinged to the said sill and means to lock the angle plate when its lower portion supports the door edge as described.
5. In a dump car door the combination of a door hinged to a hopper wall, an edge to the door, a sill, a plate secured to said sill, an angle plate hinged to the plate, a bent lever hinged to the lower side of the door and means to lock the end of the bent lever to the car wall as described.
6. In a dump car door, the combination of a door hinged to a hopper wall, said door having an edge as wide as the door, a sill, said edge adapted to meet the lower side of the sill, an angle plate hinged to the said sill and extending across the width of the door and adapted when closed to support the edge of the door, and means to lock the angle plate when closed.
Signed at Montreal, this third day of December 1910 in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD WEBB BURNETT.
