This invention relatc to an improvcnn-nt in night latches. that is. latches which may be operated by a key from the outside of the door or operated by a knob on the inside of the door. and particularlr to latches in which when the knob is turned in one direction it willn-etire the latch and hold it in its retired position: the object of the invention being a h'llll|llt' arrangement of fmrts \vhcrcbr this result is aceom dished:
and the invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts as will be hereimlfter descrilml and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ the usual casino, 2 closed at one side by a .eap 3 carrying a key cylinder 4 through which the key lever 55 may be operated as in the' usual manner. \Vithin the casing and so as to project through one end thereof is a latch bolt (3 having the usual spindle 7 which passes through a bearing 8 formed integral with the casing and loosely mounted 10. tln the end of the spindle 7 is a plate I] forming an essential partof my invention. This plate 11 is formed at one side near one edge with a lag 12, and at the opposite side in the other edge with a log 13 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. Secured to the knob 14 within the case is a knob lever 15 having; arms 16 and 17 formed with shar corners l8 and 19, which arms are adaptct to co-aet with the plate II. If, now, the knob be turned in one direction and so that the end 17 of the knob lever 15 comes in contact; with the plate 11 itwill retire the latch, but will not; hold it in its retired position; and when the knob is released the apring will throw the bolt forward. 'llhc rearwardmovement, of the latch is limited by stops 20 at the rear of the case and so thatthe knob lever 15 cannot be turned completely around. If, however, the knob is turned in the opposite direction and as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the arm 16 will engage with the plate 11 and as the plate is moved rearward will pass beyond the lu;, 12 and so that, the corner to will engage with the igand lock the lever in its turned position, and hence lock the bolt in its retracted position. If the latch-is reversed in position, the lug 12 will be in position to be engaged by the knob lever and hence lock the latch bolt, in its retired position, as before described. It
will he noted that owing to the stops in the a bolt having a, spindle, a plate secured to In testimony whereof, I have signed this the inner end of said spindle, said plate specification in the presence of two subprovided On opposite sides and in opposite scribing witnesses.
