HERBERT L. CUlVIlVIINS, OF EAST ELY, NEVADA, ASSIGNOR GF FIVE-TWELFTHS TO HENRY M. FULIVIER, 0F EAST ELY, NEVADA, AND ONE-TWELFTH TO BERT L. QUAYLE AND ONE-TWELFTH TO CHARLES S. CHANDLER.
ROTARY ENGINE.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT L. CUMMINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Ely, in the county of Vhite Fine and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rotary or turbine .engines and comprises a simple and eiiicient apparatus of this nature having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
y I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an edge view of my engine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing intermeshing gear wheels. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through the engine. Fig. l is a view in elevation, parts being shown in section. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the piston and shaft upon which the same is mounted. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views. Fig. 8 is a view of one of the rotary pistons. Fig. 9 is an end view partly in section of one of the rotary cylinders. Fig. 10 is a side elevation of the end of the casing, and Fig. 11 is an edge view of one end of the casing.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the casing of the engine which has three compartments, designated respectively by letters B7 C and D. The compartments B and D are of uniform diameter and in the walls of the compartment B a shaft B is journaled and in the walls of the compartment D a shaft D. A cylinder B2 is fixed to the shaft B and a cylinder D2 to the shaft D and each of said cylinders substantially fills the chamber in which it is mounted. Each cylinder is provided with a recess E disposed at positions diametrically opposite and the Specification of Letters Patent.

recesses of each cylinder are connected by a duct E which passes centrally through the shaft upon which the cylinder is mounted.
F, F designate inlet pipes and each communicates with vthe interior of a compartment through the ducts F and F2, the former extending substantially half way about the casing and having an inlet F3 in the cylinder at a point substantially diametrically opposite the entrance of the port or duct F.
Mounted in the walls of the central chamber is a shaft H to which a rotatable cylinder H is fixed, having radially disposed pistons H2 upon the circumference thereof. It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings that a considerable spacel intervenes between the circumference of the cylinder H and the circumferential wall of the casing in which it is mounted and which forms a steam chamber from which exhaust ports K lead to the atmosphere.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be noted that a gear wheel I is fastened to the end of the shaft H, a gear wheel I to the end of the shaft B and a gear wheel L to the shaft D, which gear wheels intermesh with one another. In order to make a suitable steam tight fitting intermediate the rotatable cylinders and the circumferential walls of the casing in which they are mounted, suitable packing rings, designated by letter N, shown clearly in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings, are mounted in grooves in each cylinder.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood and is as follows Steam being admitted at the ports F will pass directly through the ports in the cylinders B and D when they are in registration with the ports F, the steam being directed against the pistons H2, causing a rapid rotary movement to be imparted to the cylinder C. As the three cylinders are geared together, the ports will always be in registration to direct the steam pressure against the pistons at predetermined moments. As the pistons pass by the ports K, the steam will exhaust to the atmosphere.
It will be noted that, by the provision of an engine embodying the features of my invention, the latter will be perfectly balanced in any direction as steam is admitted at both sides of the pistons in the end chambers and in opposite direction.
What I claim to be new is Afrotary or turbine engine comprising a casing having two compartments and an intermediate compartment, the latter having suitable exhaust ports and the former being provided with two steam supply ports entering the compartment at points diametrically opposite, shafts mounted in the walls of each compartment, a cylinder Xed to each shaft, a space about the intermediate cylinder forming a steam chamber, pistons projecting from the central cylinder, the end cylinders having diametrically disposed ducts leading therethrough and terminating at their ends in recesses, and gear connections between the shafts.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiX my signature'in the presence'of two witnesses.
HERBERT L. GUMMINS.
