Description

J. A. BANG-ROPT. STREET SPRINKLER.
No. 101,700. Patented Apr. 12, 1870.
l IAZJMJL/AI' s? wl JOHN ABANGROFT, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.'ASSIGNOR T0 L.-
F. BANCROFT- AND ANDREW B. YETTER, OF NEW- CITY.
Letters Patent No. 101,700, dated April 12, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J om; A. BANGROFT, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Street-Sprinklers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speeilication,.and which represents a plan view of so much of a street-sprinkler as is necessary toillnstrate my present lint-pronements, a part of the sprinkling-reservoir being shown broken away to illustrate the construction more fully.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I willproneed to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists-- First, in the combination with adivided sprinklingreservoir, of three independent supply-pipes, as hereafter explained.
Second, in the combination and relative arrange ment, with the sprinkling-reservoir, of partitions and removable caps, as and for the purposes hereafter explained.
Inthe drawing- A represents a section of the bottom of the watertank, having three openings, at a a, into whichareinserted the conducting or supply-pipes B G D, which conduct the water to the sprinkling-reservoir E.
The sprinkling-reservoir E is made in three sections or compartments, F G H, each being provided with openings in the bottom, stopped by suitable screw-plugs or caps, b b b b, and the sections or compartments F and H each having similar openings or outlets and caps or plugs, b, at their outer ends.
These .openings or.outlets are for the purpose of cleansing the sprinkler from any sediment or obstructions that may accumulate therein, and which is done by removing the screw-plugs and opening the gates, and letting on a full head of water, the force of which, entering through the pipes B O D, and passing out through the outlets stopped by the plugs b, carries out any sand, dirt, or other sediment or obstructions that may have accumulated or lodged in the sprinklingreservoir.
Each opening a is to be provided with a separate valve, so that it can be closed by the driver at pleasure, to shut off the water from one or all of the compartments,as may be desired.
It will be seen that, by making the sprinkling-res- :rvoir with divisions, d, to form sections or compart- 3 ments, as shown, the whole or any portion of thewidth of the street may be sprinkled, as maybe desired. For instance, if it is desired to-sprinkle only a portion of the street,.on the right-hand side, the driver opens the valve to pipe B, which allows the water to pass into the compartment H, and only that part of the street will begsprinkled.
To sprinkle the left-hand side of the street, the operation would be reversed, the valve to pipe D being, o ened, andthe water conducted. through the same to compartment F, the'other valve remaining closed; while, if it was desired to sprinkle a portion of the center of the street, water would be let into pipe '0, and distributed through the section, G of the sprinkler upon that portion of the street.
In sprinkling streets, it is often desirable to stop the flow of water from one or both sides of the sprinkler, especially when driving near the curb-stones, or
through narrow streets, to avoid wetting carriages and the clothing of persons on the adjoining sidewalks or in carriages standing at the side of the street,
and also to avoid startingrestive horses, which, it Will be seen, can readily be done with my improved sprinkler, and that, too, in a more convenient and desirable manner than it can be done by the sprinkler-in which side guards are used, as in the sprinkler patented to Bancroft and Yetter, March 3d, 1868, as the assignees of L. F. Bancroft, and npon which sprinkler my invention is an improvement.
By said L. F. Bancrofts arrangement, the side guards, when down, arestruck by the water, causing a hissing sound; whereas, by my invention, such objection is entirely obviated, while at the same time a great saving of water is efiected.
Having described myirnprovements in street-sprink- Iers,
\Vhat I claim'therein 'as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the sprinkling-reservoir E, of the division-plates or partitions d and independent supply-pipes B, O, and D, substantially as and for the purposes stated. I
2. The'coinbination with the sprinkling-reservoir E, of the partitions d and'stop-plugs or caps, as shown and described. JOHN A. BANOROFT.
