De it known that'l, EDWARD PossoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End Door-Framing for Cars. of which the following is a specification.
The object of my inventionv is to provide a door at the end of such cars as are used for transporting furniture and other mei-chanu dise which it is desirable tol load upon the car through the end thereof. Many articles. such as automobiles, are much more conveniently placed in the car in this manner. l hav also provided suitable end framing for the car to accomniodate the .said doors. This end frai'ning is especially adapted to support and receive the doors and I preferably use flanged bars for suoli portion of the frame as innnediately surrounds the doors.'
The flanges of these bars serve very conveniently as door Jambs for the doors to rest against in their closed positions. The
Ilanges also are very convenient for the at-` tachment of steel plates of which the end wall of the car is composed. l find thatordinary rolled Z-bars, which are a common commercial product, are especially preferable for these frame members.
Numerous other features and advantages of in v improved end wall and end doors will become readily apparent in the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings and will be more specitically pointed out in the claims.

15 refer to vertical `members spaced a short distance from the side walls of the car to which the doors are hinged. These vertical 'members '15 are preferably Z-bars having one of their flangesla dispo-sed directly behind the hinged edge of the door. 'Another Z-bar'lG near the top of the car is disposed member 17. This angle bar 19 is placed transversely of the ear and'together'with the plate 17 to which it is'riveted serves as an eflicient frame 'member. Other short angle bars 20 are placed above the plate 17 at its outer edge and at each side of the door opening. Another angle bar 21 extends the full width of the car and-is placed below'l the outer edge of the plate 17. The angle bars 2O and 21 are riveted to the plate 17 by rivets 17a. The angle bar 21 also adds its strength to the plate 17. Other vertical frame menibers 22 immediately adjacent the side walls of the car and preferably of wood extend from the transverse plate 17 at the bottom to the transverse member 1G atthe top. lt will be seen that the vertical members 15 and 22 are spaced apart. In this space at the top of said members is placed a U-shaped member 23, which is secured to both of said vertical members 15 and 22 and to the transverse member 16. This U-shaped member is formed of a flatbar which has its two ends bent at right angles to its middle portion. Its middle portion 23a is secured to the web 16a of the Z-bar 1G and vits ends 28h and 2SC are secured to the vertical members 15 and 22 respectively. A. similar U-shaped mem be; '74 is placed between the lower endsof the vertical members 15 and 22 and'is secured to the said vertical members and the lower transverse member 17 in a similar manner. The upwardly turned end '25 -'is secured to the web of the Z-bar and the other upwardly turned end 26 is secured to the vertical member 22.

The inner end wall plate 30 is placed against the flange 15a of the Z-bar and against the vertical member 22. The outer end wall rplate 31 is placed against the outer flange 15b of the Z-bar 15 and against the outer surface of the vertical member 22. The side walls of the car may be composed of the boards 32 and 33 separated by the spacing pieces 34. i
The end doors 35 and '36 of the car arev Yattached to the vertical members 15 by the hinge members 37 and 38. The outer flange 15b of the vertical Z-bar 15 becomes very convenient for the attachment of said hinge members 38. The bolts 39 and 40 at the bottom of the doors are guided and held in position by the strap bars 41. The lower ends of the bolts 39 and 40 engage the flanged plate 42 and by this means the doors are held securely closed' at their lower edges when the bolts 39 and 40 are pushed down. Similar bolts 43 and 44 working in strap bars 45 are provided for holding the upper edges of the doors. These bolts are provided with a forwardly projecting end l44a by which they can be operated. The upper edges of the doors are provided with plates 44b having a beveled edge 44C,I said plates serving as a bearing for the lower ends of the bolts when pushed down. Small plates 44d provide metal seats for said bolts 43, 44. A pin 44e in each of said bolts serves to limit the downward movement when -it strikes one of the guides 45.
In order to more securely hold the 'doors in closed position I have provided inside locking bars 46 pivoted to one of said doors at 47. These locking bars engage clips 48 and 50 which have raised ends 49 and 51 beneath which the ends of the locking bars 46 are wedged when closed. One of the end portions 461'of each of said bars is longer than the other in order to permit,
gravity to assist in holding the said bars in their closed positions.
The bars 46 are composed chiefly of channel bars. These channel bars have their flanges cut away at 52 to permit the entrance of the web 52 of he channel bar beneath the ends 49and 51 of the clips and 50.
The doors oo and 36 are composed chiefly of two steel plates 56 and 57 which arespaced apart by wood members 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, etc. The wood members 58 are placed at the bottom of said doors between said plates and the member 59 at the tops thereof. The vertical member 60 may be placed at the outer edges of the doorslandrthe vertical member 61 at the inner edge of one door. The member 61 is beveled to fit the corresponding beveled member 62 of the adjacent door. The outer plate 56 of the door 35 is lipped or flanged at 63 in such manner as to properly fit over the edge of the outer plate of the door 36. The wood members 58, 59, 60.and 61 will be seen-to serve as ,an 'outer framing of the door 35 and at the same time may serve as spacing blocks for the plates 56 and 57. The door 36 is constructed in a similar manner. The interior of said doors have similar 'spacing pieces 64 arranged in a 'vertical position and bet-Ween said members 64 are placed short horizontally disposed spacing blocks 65 having their ends set into notches in the vci tical members 64;
' All of the above described spacing members are held in position by rivets 66 which pass entirely through both plates 56 and 57 and through the said spacing members. These rivets serve to hold the plates 56 and 57 firmly in position against said spacing members and by this means a very rigid and substantial door is produced with the minimum Weight.
Immediately above the transverse member 17 at the bottom of the end wall of the car I place a transverse wooden strip 67 having a vertically disposed iiange or shoulder 67a and a forwardly inclined surface 68. The
-lower edges of the doors 35 -and 36 -are slightly beveled to permit them to malte a close engagement with the said strip 67, the said lower edges of the doors bearing against the shoulder 67a when closed. The upper Vedges .of the doors bear against a spacing block 69 which is placed against the inner iiange of the Z-bar 16. The vertical outer edges of the doors bear against vertical strips 70 which are placed immediately in front of the inwardly projecting flanges 15a of the vertical Z-bars 15.
The doors 35 and 36 are provided with handles 71 of a common form. The link or hasp 72 is pivotally attached to the staple 73 on one of the doors and is provided with a slot74 at the other end which is adapted tor'receive a similar staple 75 in the other door. Through the staple 75 may be placed the usual hook or other device 75a to which the seal is attached. The hook T5 may be attached to the door by the chain T6.
The use and operation of my improved end door will be readily apparent from the preceding description. It will be seen that I have provided a. rigid framework about the door. which also serves as a substantial framing for the end wall of the car. The vertical members 15 being made of' rolled bars, commonly known as Z-bars. are very convenient for, the purpose. The inner flanges of this Z-bar, being disposed i'nward'ly with respect to the door opening, serve as very convenient door jambs. The inner flange also very convenient for the attachment of' the inner wall plates. The outer flange ot' said Z-bar is also convenient for the attachment of the outer wall plates.
lhile I have described more or less precisely the details otconstruction, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto as I contemplate changes in form and the proportion of parts and the substitution of details as circumstances may suggest or render expedient Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. An end framing for a car comprising vertical frame members spaced from the side walls of said car and abutting a horizontalframe member at their upper ends, said horizontal member extending beyond the upper extremities ot' said vertical members, and having a. downwardly projecting flange to serve as a lintel for a door.

In afcar, an end framing comprising a vertical bar spaced from the side wall of the car, a vertical bar adjacent the side-Wallof the car, a. metal connecting piece between said bars having ends bent to lie flatwise against said bars, bolts for securing said side wall, said adjacent bar, and said connecting piece together, said connecting piece being secured to said first named vertical bar, and a door associated with said framing.
