To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, HANS SCHNEIDER, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of 14 Pheatergasse, Nuremberg, Germany, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Clipping Machines, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to clipping machines in which mechanism is provided for automatically regulating the length of the cut to be made, such means including a threaded extension carried by the bottom comb plate and a threaded wheel, meshing therewith, which causes the cutting means 15 to be gradually raised from the bottom comb plate upon actuation of the cutting means. This threaded extension serves as a rack for the threaded wheel to climb on and the former is revolubly mounted on the bottom comb plate and provided with interrupted portions, which being of different lengths, are adapted to be interchanged or arranged in the path of movement of the threaded wheel to render the same inactive.

5 An object of my invention is, therefore, to

provide means for rendering such mechanism inoperative, or to limit the movement after the cutting means has reached a predetermined distance from the bottom comb plate and provide for uniform cutting thereafter, such limitation being adjustable at the will of the operator, an indicator being provided to determine the limited distance to which the cutting mechanism may be moved from the bottom comb plate.

Further objects of my invention will appear from the following detail description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. in which,--

In the drawings B represents a bottom comb plate provided with a recessed portion l to accommodate a threaded extension CZ, revoluble with the comb plate and held in place by a ring f.

The threaded extension is provided, at its upper end, with a series of interruptions, or

flat portions, indicated at g, g', and g,

which are of different lengths and extend longitudinally of the threaded extension, the purpose of these interruptions to be subsequently described. rIhe threaded extension is further provided with a lever h, working in the recessed portion 1, by which the former is rotated.

The cutting mechanism comprises the usual cutting combs a and a', the latter hav ing a base plate a, which is carried by the fixed case r, while the former is movable with a collar s carried by the fixed case.

In order to provide for the automatic raising of the cutting mechanism from the bottom comb plate, a worm wheel e, carried by the base plate a is actuated through intermeshing gears o and o, the latter receiving movement through a pawl p carried by an extension s of the movable collar s. Thus, as Athe cutting mechanism is actuated, the worm wheel e climbing the threaded extension d, which serves as a rack, raises the cutting mechanism from the bottom comb plate b.

In order to provide means for guiding the hair after the cutting mechanism is a considerable distance from the bottom comb plate an intermediate comb plate m is placed between the cutting mechanism and the bottom comb plate which follows closely the former. This intermediate comb plate is rovided with rearwardly extending arms n by which the same may be secured to the bottom comb plate. As shown in Fig. 3 the forward portion of the comb end is resilient and is normally formed to spring upwardly as indicated in dotted lines.

'Ihe operation of the device is as follows When it is desired to render the worm wheel inactive after the cutting mechanism has reached a predetermined distance from the bottom comb plate b, the threaded extension Z is set with one of the interrupted portions g, g, or g, according to the ldistance set, in t-he path of the worm wheel. In order to retain the threaded extension with one of the interrupted portions in the path of the worm wheel, the lever 7L may be provided with a stop i, adapted to enter depressions c, 7a', or 7c in the bottom comb plate, said depressions corresponding to the position of the interrupted portions g, g', and g respectively, with reference to the path of the worm wheel.

It is, of course, understood that any number of interrupted portions may be provided on the threaded extension, since the latter forms a number of racks, which may be thrown in operative relation to the worm wheel, and further, that any number of depressions may be provided in the bottom comb plate for retaining any one of the interrupted portions in the path of the worm wheel. I claim l. A hair clipping machine comprising a bottom plate, a threaded extension revoluble with and carried by said plate, said threaded extension being provided with Hattened portions of different lengths extending longitudinally of the periphery thereof, cutting mechanism superjacent to said plate and movable relative thereto, a threaded wheel in engagement with said threaded extension and carried bysaid cut-ting mechanism, means rotating said wheel upon actuation of' said cutting mechanism, whereby the latter is raised from said plate, and means retaining said threaded extension upon one of said iattened portions in the path of said threaded wheel, whereby the same is ren# dered inactive upon movement to the said interrupted portion, combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A hair clipping machine comprising a bottom plate, cutting mechanism superjacentto said plate and movable relative thereto, means operable upon actuation of said cutting mechanism for raising the latter `from said plate, interchangeable means rendering said first mentioned means inoperative subject to movement between the cutting mechanism and said plate through a line of predetermined length, and a guide comb interposed between said cutting mechanism and Said bottom plate adapted to follow closely the cutting mechanism upon movement thereof, for guiding the hair thereto.

3. In a hair clipping machine, the combination with a bottom comb plate, cutting mechanism superjacent to said' plate, and movable relative thereto, of a resilient comb plate intermediate the said comb plate and cutting mechanism, adapted to follow closely the cutting mechanism upon movement thereof, for guiding the hair thereto.
