To all whom it may come m Be it known that I, THOMAS L. McKcnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton .and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Car Butlers and End Sills, of which the following is a specification. I
'lflris invention relates more particularly to improvements in balling apparatus intended for use on freight cars ha vino; hollow n'ietallic end sills, tor supplementing the boiling action of the draft gear.
One of the principal objects of tho inven tion is; to provide a. combined end sill and butter construction in which the hollow end sill itself constitutes the containing box or casing for the movable parts of the butting apparatus, whereby the necessity of a separate box or casing for the butting apparatus is avoided and the cost and *(lgl'lh oi the apparatus consequently materially reduced, while at the same time the boiling apparatus does not project out from the end of the car but is practically hidden from View in the end sill and-inclosed and protected thereby.

This spri butler chamber and extends into a cavity and confining the parts of preferably arranged in the provided for it in the buffer head, and con sists of inner and outerspring coils, but this arrangement is not absolutely essential.
The several parts of the buffer-are inserted into the chamber F through the opening f in the outer wall thereofpandare retained in the chamber by cover plates K which partly close the opening f'in the outer wall of the end' sill and are adapted to engage outwardly facing shoulders is at opposite sides of the buffer head,to limit the outward movement of the buffer head. In the construction shown, these cover plates, see Figs. and 4, are slid' into place between grooved lugs is on the outer wall of the end sill and are secured by bolts 7?. In the normal position of the parts, the buffer head is held in a position to leave a space between the same and the horn c of the coupler which allows an inward move ment of the coupler for coupling cars that is LLSlsiir only by the draft gear 1).- VVhen the coupler is driven farther, inwardly in bulling, the born 0 strikes the butler-head and moves it inwardly against the resistance of the friction bailing apparatus in the end sill ,which thus supplements the resistance of the draft gear D and permits the use of a light draftgear which alone would not have the T pulling capacity required on freight cars;
The buiiing apparatus constructed and arranged in the end sill described adds but little to the cost of the car.
I claim as mygi'nvention: I
1. The combnuation with a car having a hollow metal end sill, of a coupler havin a drawbar extending under the end sill ant l a part projecting upwardly in front of the end sill, a draft gear for said coupler, a bufferhead arranged in said hollow end sill in rear of said projection on the coupler and adapted to be moved inwardly by' the upwardly projecting part of said coupler, and friction resistance devices arranged i-n'said -hollow end sill at opposite sides of said buffer head and exerting pressure laterally against said butler head to resist the inward movement thereo substantially as set forth. i
