Description

JOSEPH snAcKLE'roN, 0E nAWA-Y, NEW JERSEY.
Lena-.9 Puma No. 101,669, mail April 5, 1870.
'IMPROVEMENT 1N STEAM HEATERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent nd making parto: me same i TcY all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEr'n SHACKLETON, of Rahway, in the county of Union and State of New J ersey, have invented a certain new and improved Steam- Injector, for utilizing exhaust steam for heating purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and complete description of the same,v reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which drawings- 4'.liignre 1 is a side view of the injector for utilizing exhaust steam for heatingpurposes.
Figure 2 is au end view.,
Like letters of reference refer to like parts inthe several views.
, Objective.
The nature 'of this invention relates to an arrangement of certain devices by which -live steam is employed to facilitate the escape of exhaust or exhausting ,steam, when used for heating purposes, thereby reducing the back-action on the piston when exhaust steam is'- utilized for heating purposes, as herein set forth.
Bcscriptire.' A and B, fig. 1, re'present an ordinary,steam-boilerA and furnace, by the sidev of which is an engine, C, to
which it is connected by an induction steam-pipe, I),
and of which E is the exhaust-pipe, all of which is or may be constructed in the ordinary Way.
The system or arrangement of pipcsfor heat-ing 'purposes is connected with the exhaust-pipe ,E by
any suitable means.
The induction and exhaustpipes are put iucommunication 4with each other by a jet-pipe, F, provided with a'key, G, .whereby theV communication between the pipes may be cut off when so required.
1n the'useof exhaust steam for heating purposes, the jet-pipe may be connected directly to the boiler, instead of to the induction-pipe.
It occurs in a system or arrangement of pipes forA heat-ing, that the action of the condensed .and nondensing steam therein from the engine, prevents a free escape of the exhaust, which produces a backaction on .the piston. This is greatly` more so when the apparatus used in heating is of large size, and especially is this the casewhen the extended range of pipes is used. Under such circumstances, the backpres'sure ou the piston is greatly increased, and therefore is a serious obstruction to the full working capacity of the engine. Y
To avoid such obstruction is 4a feature of thisin vention, and which is eiiected as follows: v
, From'the induction-pipelL or directlyfrom thc boiler, a fine jetof vlive lsteam is conducted into the exhaust-.pipe E, which is supposedto be attached to the heating apparatus, bythe pipe, F, referred to, the result of which is to drive the steam lingering in the exhaust and connecting-pipes forward by the force and activity of the steam, takendirectly from the iriduction-pipe 'or boiler, thereby .not only facilitating the escape of the exhausting steam, and relieving the engine from back-pressure, but assisting in raising the Atemperature of the heating apparatus to that degree of heat that little vor no condensation 'of steam will take place in the heater; hence'the exhaust-steam will escape withoutI obstruction, and, consequently, the engine will run free of back-pressure.
The live steam 1uaybe shut o by means of the stop-cock G referred to, and all the h've steam used upon the piston. v A
C Zafim.
v What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure| by Letters Patent, isv The devices, substantially as herein describedLtbr heating by means of exhaust and live steam, consisting ofthe pipe F, in combination with pipe D, or
