Be it known that I, BURTON R. MoCoL- LOM, citizen of the United States, residing at Fenton, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window screens of the extensible type, that is a screen made up of a plurality of sections having a slidable interlocking connection with one another whereby the screen is adapted for use in connection with windows of varying widths.
The main object of the invention is to provide an improved screen of the character just stated with novel means of connection between the slid-able parts, with the result that the screen is more cheaply constructed and rendered more eflicient in operation and devoid of the faulty binding action of the parts in operation, due largely to the swelling, splitting or warping of the usual wood make-up of the screen sections.
More particularly the invention includes two or more sections the frame part of which is conveniently of wood with a telescoping interlocking connection between the sections, the connection including an improved type of angled metallic strip secured in a novel manner to the side of one section extending substantially throughout the length thereof, and having a slidable interlocking connection with the edge of the other section.
The invention also includes other improvements, and novel detalls 1n the construction and arrangement of the several parts, to be more particularly referred to herein after in the detailed description which for a clear understanding of the invention should be read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and wherein I have shown for the purpose of illustration a preferred embodiment of the invention.

Again referring to the drawings wherein like reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views I have shown for the purpose of illustration the screen in two sections namely A and B. The section A comprises a side or end strip 1 and a superimposed strip 2 secured in any desired manner as by tacks or nails 3 so as to support therebetween one edge of the screening 4. The top and bottom frame sections comprise conveniently single strips 5 having a slot 6 extending longitudinally thereof for the reception of the top and bottom edges of the screening 4 which lat ter is secured by tacks or the like 7. The sect-ion 1 of the end frame has a recess 8 adjacent its opposite ends and the section 2 an alined recess 9 the said recesses being adapted to receive tongues 10 formed by slotting the ends of the top and bottom sections 5, said slotted portion fitting over the tongue formed by the recess 9 in the part- 2. The side, top and bottom sections are secured together at the corners where interlocked by tacks or the like. Extending longit-udinally of the top and bottom sections 5 is a slot or saw-cut 10 the outer edge of the inner wall surrounding said slot being positioned at a point slightly below the outer edge of the other wall of the slot for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
The section B comprises an end frame made up of strips 11 and 12 superimposed and secured to one another by tacks or the like 13 to retain therebetween the edge of the screening 14. Said end frame connects with the top and bottom frames 15 at the corners, said connection being formed as follows: The sections 11' and 12 have recessed portions 11 and 12 adapted for the reception ofprojecting tongues 16 formed by grooving the end of the top and bottom parts 15 as shown at 15 It is noted that the top and bottom of the screen 14 is fitted i n grooved portions 14 of the top and bottom frame 15 and held in place by suitable tacks or the like. Extending longitudinally of the inner faces of each of the top and bottom frames 15 adjacent the outer edges thereof is a groove or saw-out 17 and adapted to be secured in said groove is one flange 18 of a metallic strip substantially L- shaped in cross section, the other flange 18 being unsecured and adapted to slidably engage in the grooved portion 10 of the top and bottom sections of the frame A.
l The angled bar is preferably of thin met-a1 adapted to be bent as shown, and the flange 18 is secured in position through the medium ofnails, brads or the like 19, which latter may be applied by any suitable nailing machine, whereby all the nails may be driven at one time. It will be noted that the flange 18 of the metallic strip engages the top and bottom frames 15 at a pointwithin the exposed edges thereof and that said flange will likewise be positioned below the exposed edges of the cooperating top and bot-tom frames 5 by reason of the factthat' the inner wall surrounding the grooves of the top and bottom frames 5 is relatively shorter than the opposed wall of said grooves. In this way it will be noted that the metallic interlocking members offer no protuberance beyond the exposed edges of either the top and bottom frames of the respective sections A and B. In this connection, it is noted that the part 1 of the section A is provided with overhanging flanges 1 fitting a reduced portion in the interlocked ends 5, the overhanging flange being adapted to constitute in effect a continuation of the end of the part 2 of said end frame. In the same way the end frame member 11 has overhanging flanges 11 adapted to flt over a reduced portion 11 in the side of the tongues formed at the end of the top and bottom frame members 15. This particular interlocking connection formed at the corners of the screen sect-ions affords a very substantial and solid support for the screen at its ends or corners, and said ends will be in line with the exposed edges of the top and bottom frames.
It will be observed that the flange 18 of the metallic strip'has a rather loose connection with the groove of the top and bottom frames of the section A and the parts are so arranged asto permit of warping or swelling of the wooden strips, it being borne in mind that the frame sections are conveniently constructed of wood. This loose connection is also aided by the fact that the flange 18 of the metallic strip does not extend to the base of the groove in the top and bottom frames of the section A, with the resultant play.
Suitable brace members extend between the top and bottom frames of each section ad jacent the unconnected ends thereof, the said laterally from their connection with the screenings, the off set portions being adapted to contact with the screen of the opposite section and afford a closed joint, and the off set flanges of the respective bracing members constituting stops and abutments for limiting the extension movement and preventing separation of the parts.
What I claim is:
1. An extensible screen comprising frame sections, one of said sections having a groove in its upper edge and the other section having a groove in its side spaced from its edge, and a metallic strip substantially L-shaped in cross section secured in one of said grooves and having a loose engagement with the other groove whereby the sections are slidably interlocked, and whereby the edges of the strip are inclosed and protected by the surrounding walls.
2. An extensible screen comprising frame sections, one of said sections having a groove in its upper edge and the other section having a groove in its side spaced from its edge, and a metallic strip substantially L-shaped in cross section secured in one of said grooves and having a loose engagement with the other groove whereby the sections are slidably interlocked, the angled strip when in place being co-extensive with one of said sections and positioned below the exposed outer edges of the sections.
3. In an extensible screen, the combination of wood frame sections, one section having a groove in its upper and lower edges intermediate the opposite surface of said sections, and a second section having a metallic strip secured to the upper and lower sides of the said second section at a pointspaced from the edges thereof and co-extensive therewith,
