To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GUILD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke and Spark Destroyers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements insmoke and spark destroyers or preventers and more particularly to that class of preventers used in connection with locomotives, the object being to provide an improved smoke and spark preventing apparatus which shall be at all times under the control of the engineer or fireman in the locomotive cab.
A further object of my invention is to provide an apparatus as stated which shall be simple of construction and etlicient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter;
described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a locomotive provided with my improved smoke destroying apparatus, Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the locomotive stack showing a portion of the smoke preventing apparatus, Fig. 3 is a vertical sect-ion taken on line zc-w of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line y-y of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction and arrangement of my improved apparatus, as
, illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
comprises a steam conveying pipe 1 which is arranged adjacent the exterior surface 2 of the locomotive boiler. The pipe 1 ex tends rearwardly to a portion 3 thereof which extends rearwardly ttufough the shell 6 of the boiler to the locomotive cab 7 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Connected with the portion 3 of the pipe 1 is an upwardly extending pipe 8 which is connected to the steam space 9 of the boiler by means of a coupling "50 and control valve 11, the latter being situated within easy access of the locomotive men. The steam conveying pipe 1 terminates at its forward end in a vertically disposed pipe 12 which is con nected by means of a coupling 12 to a van tically disposed pipe 13 arranged within the locomotive stack 14. The upper end ofthe pipe 13 terminates approximately in the middle of the stack 14. and is connected with a hollow steam receiving member 1-5 as clearly illustrated in Fig. The member 15 is provided with curved endslfi which con form to the interior surface of the stack and are secured thereto by means of ti shaped clips 17 which embrace the ends 16 and are secured to the walls of the stack by means of rivets 18. Formed the walls of the hollow memberl is a scrim of perforations 19 which are inclined so as to direct the steam which issues thereih'ona transversely of the stack 14: as'indicated by arrows 20 in Fig. 2. The arrangement of the perforations 19 is such, that the sprays of steam issuing therefrom will come in contact with practically all of the smoke and sparks which fiow upwardly through the stack 14;, thus tending to absorb the smoke and to cool the sparks below the Y temperature of ignition.
In order to prevent overheating of the hollow member 15 caused by the hot smoke and sparks contacting therewith on the lower surface thereof, the same is substantially heart-shaped in cross section, as illustrated in Fig. 3, thus presenting a sharp or knife edge to the ascending smoke which is deflected. This conformation of the member 15 produces a minimum of resistance to the upward flow of gases, and hence does not interfere with the draft of the locomotive.
It will be observed that since the portion 3' of the pipe 1 is protected by the boiler shell 6 that steam flowing through said portion will not be condensed, consequently the full pressure of steam will be exerted in the steam sprays issuing from the perform tions 19. I
An apparatus of the construction set forth serves to effectually lessen the volume of smoke and sparks which issue from the locomotive stack, and, since the same is under the control of the locomotive. engineer, is a valuable accessory on a locomotive.
WVhile I have illustrated anddescribed the'preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable-of vari ation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention.
