' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARKE IV. McKnn, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego .and State of California, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in Patches for Pneumatic Tires, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to patches for pneumatic tires and is more particularly adapted to be used in cases ofblow-outs or ruptures in the outer casing which allows the inner tube, which is of soft rubber, to be also ruptured, thus rendering the tire useless.
The objects of my invention are to provide a simple and economical means for pro- I tecting the inner tubes at the places of puncture or rupture, thus enabling the user to proceed without the necessity of immediately taking the casing to a repair shop.
With these and other objects'in view as will appear, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as are hereinafter described in detail and more particularly set ,forth in the appended claim, reference being 'had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section of an outer casing, inner tube and wheel rim showing my device in connection therewith, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of a portion of aninflated inner tube and showing my de vice inoperative connection therewith.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views. My device consists of a piece of pliable material which is as near non-elastic as pos-- sible, and tapers gradually on each side from pointl to the end 2. From point 1 the material is extended to point 3, then folded back against itself to point 1 again, then extended to point 4 and folded back against itself to point 1 again. These two folds or flaps are substantially sewed together, and along the outer edges thereof is aplurality of holes 5 adapted for lacing. The fold or flap extending to'point 3 is short, being only long enough to provide for the holes 5, while i around the inner tubing several times, be
ginning with the end 2. The material being tapered causes each layer ,to overlap the prior one. It is made of a sufficient length to wrap around the tubing several times and then the two flaps are placed over the portion wrapped, and laced together by means oflacing 6 as shown best in Fig.3.

It is obvious that I have provided a patch fonpneumatic tires which may be economically and easily applied and that bythe wrapping of the material several times around the tubing and the material being as non-elastic as possible, and thoroughly laced around the inner tube at the place where the rupture is, there will be provided a good and substantial patch which may be used temporarily, or in case the outer casing is not too badly injured, may be used for a considerable time, thus adding to the life of the tire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A patch for pneumatic tires comprising a band of practically non-elastic material tapered toward the one end, the other end thereof beingprovided with a short flap adapted for lacing and another longer flap similarly adapted andof sufiicient 'length when used in connection with said short flap to reach around the inner inflated tube, and means for lacing the two edges of the said flaps together, all substantially as set forth.
