Other objects of my invention will be' hereinafter set forth.
According-to the preferred form of my invention, I connect the switch to a=member which is normally free to move independently of the'switch and I provide an electromagnet 'for causing said member, when actuated, to operate the switch.
In order to more fully disclose my invention I have shown, in the accompanying drawings, a, motor controller provided with a switch embodying one form thereof.
Of course., my invention vmay be embodied invarious other 'forms and used in other connections.

. The various parts-of the controller are'inclosed within a casing 1.l Verticallymounted f within the casing, in vsuitable bearings 2 and 3, isa shaft 4 which carries a drum 5. The drum 5 carries a series of contact segments 6 which are arranged to successively engage a series of contacts y7, mounted on an insulating base 8 secured to the back ofl the'casing 1. In practice, the contacts.l 7 are connected to a resistance connected in circu'itjwith the motor arma-ture.- Mounted directly below the drum is a horizontally disposed insulating base 9 which is supported in back by an angle bar 10 carried by the base-8, and in front by rods 11. The base 9 carries two contact segments 12 and, 13 and also two Series ofcontacts 14l and 15. nism which embodies my invention.
' All of the parts which I shall now ,describe are carried by an insulating panel 19 which is secured to the back of the-casin 1 in any suitable manner. Thisv movement of the arm- 37 imparts practically nomovement to the'switchv24, and it wh-therefore, be apparent that, .until the magnet 45 attracts its armature, it 'will be impossible to close the switch 24. `This arrangement protects the motor -against damage in case the controller is carelessly operated'. .Assuming now that the magnet 45 is energized and'attracts 'its 'armature l49, as shown .in'Fig 6, the rear end of the arm 37 will be locked against lateral movement by the lpin -41 carried thereby, which litsin the slot 51 in said a1'- mature. The foregoing is obvious, for, in order to again close the switch without returning the controller to starting position, the magnet 45 would have to attract its armature member against the opposition of the spring 26, which it is unable to do, even though normal voltage is immediately restored to the line.
Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

The combination with a controller having an operating member, of a main line switch, a member connected to said switch and movable independently thereof, said member being adapted to be actuated by said operating member, and an electromagnet adapted to cause said member, when actuated, to close said main switch.

The combination with a controller having an operating shaft, of a pivoted main line switch, an arm pivoted intermediate of its ends to said switch,`a cam carried by said shaft adapted to engage one'- a low-voltage magnet having a pivoted armature, a pin carried at the opposite end of said arn'i adapted to Work in a slot in said pivoted armature, said armature, when attracted by said magnet, being adapted to cause said "arm, when actuated by .said cam, to close said switch, and means for opening said switch, irre spective of the position of said cam, when said armature is released by said magnet.
