Specification of Letters Batent.

and too close proximity to the mouthpiece of the instrument, the primary objectbeing to protect the person from disease germs while'using the instrument.
Another object, is to expose any germs communicated from or by the personusing the instrument to the action of light and air, and, if desired, of a disinfectant.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention comprises a guard-ring of suitable internal diameter and a plurality of converging flexible or spring-tempered legs projecting from one side of the ring and having their free ends gripping the mouthpiece near or at the inner end thereof and preferably entering grooves or recesses at or near such end, whereby the ring is firmly held *some distance ig front of the outer end of the mouthpiecef iir the preferred form of the invention, said legsare provided with external jogs, shoulders or oflsets to receive and retain in place a hollow ring containing a felt or other suitable absorbent for a disinfectant.
The invention is embodied in the attachment shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, in which a Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section and partly broken away, of a telephone-transmitter mouthpiece guard attached thereto; and Fig. 2 is an end-view, from the left in Fig. '1, of the mouthpiece and the guard.
In the-drawing, the reference symbol 2 marks the mouthpiece of the transmitter, which mouthpiece screws into the head 3 as usual and is provided'with the usual grooves or recesses 4. at the inner or smaller end thereof. The reference 5 marks a ringof suitable material, from one side .of which with thering there extend three converging springtempered or resilient legs 6, which, at their free ends, grasp or grip the transmitter or other cone 2, and which, in the preferred arrangement,'enter said grooves or recesses 4, being flattened, if necessary, at-their ends 7 to enter the grooves the more readily. There the ring 5 is molded, cast or crimped into circular form, the legs 6 may be at-- tached thereto by bending their ends 8. as shown to embed them in the ring itself. The legs 6 shown are jogged or notched at 9 to form a shoulder 10 to hold in place the hollow ring 11, which is open on 1ts inner face and is filled with an absorbent/12 for a suitable" disinfectant. The ring 11 is preferably continuous and snaps into the jogs aforesaid,
and when the guard is in place, as shown,-
such ring 11 cannot/be displaced,yet it maybe filled as and when desired with disinfectant. It will be noted that I provide'a guard whichis smooth and free from joints,
chinks and crevices wheredirt and germs can gather, nor can itscratch or injure the face or lips of the person using it, it is self.- adjusting to the mouthpieces and does not damage the plating on the telephone-trans mitters, as it is drawn forward out of contact with the head 3 when the mouthpiece 2 is screwed in or ofl".
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is-- 1. In mouthpieces for telephone-transmittersand the like, the combination with the cone-mouthpiece provided at its smaller end with recesses, of a ring provided with legs the free ends of which convergea-nd engage with said recesses.
2. An attachment for telephone-transmit,-
ters and the like, comprising a ring having converging flexible legs extending from one side thereof to and engaging with the outer surface of the mouthpiece cone, said legs being jogged externally near said ring, and
a disinfectant-holding ring-pad seated .in'
saidjogs.
