UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CHARLES M. CLINTON, OF ITHACA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND A. H. GREGG, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN LAWN-MOWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 101,585, dated April 5, 1870.
To all whom it may concern.-
I, CHARLES M. CLINTON, of Ithaca, Tompkins county, New York, have invented an .[mproved Hand or Lawn Mower, of which the following is a specification My object is to make a simple, efl'ective machine, light and easily managed, and adapted especially to mow dooryards, lawns, and other like places; and the nature of my invention will be apparent as I describe it.
Figure 1 is a side view or elevation of my machine; and Fig. 2, a view from above, looking down on it.
In Fig. 1, A is one. of two side pieces of the triangular frame, meeting 'in the upper part in a handle, and having on their lower ends the metallic bar E, connecting them into one frame. To this are attached by studs the wheels 0 C, which support the machine, and the set roller or rollers D, and the drivingwheel H, which gears into the pinion i, and thus operates, through a shaft, I, the crank to which the connecting-rod J is attached, which rod, at its lower end, is connected to an angled lever, G, guided by a slotted plate, 9, and pivoted at g, and whose lower end is joined to the cutter-bar F by the stud f. In
Fig. 2 the same parts are seen, and their operation is more clearly apparent.
The operator takes hold of the handle B with his left hand, and with his right, by the crank-handle h, turns the driver H, which moves the pinion z", and, through the shaft 1, the crank-plate on the end of the said shaft opposite z', and thus moves the angled lever G, through the rod J, and the cutter-bar F backward and forward with its knives in the finger-guards, while held and guided by the metal frame-plate E. The roller D is adjustable by a set-screw and slotted plate, and regulates the distance from the ground at which the knives cut.
Other and lesser parts are seen in the drawlngs.
The advantages and uses of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
The arrangement and combination of the triangular frame A A E, the handle B, the handled driver H, shaft I and its pinion '5, and crank-plate rod J, angled lever G, guide-roller D, wheels 0 C, cutter-bar and its knives in their finger-guards, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto snlr scribed my name.
CHARLES M. CLINTON.
Vitnesses EDGAR I-IUsoN, J. L. CUTTER.
