COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1912.
Application filed November 30, 1909. Serial No. 530,613.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WAYNE JACKSON and VILLIAM E. F RY, citizens of the United States, bot-h residing at Paola, in the county of Miami and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following .is a specification.
The object of this invention is the improved construction of a combination tool the parts of which may be projected or retracted one at a time so that the device is capable of a large number of uses, which will make it a handy article while at the same time it will not be unnecessarily bulky and will be so arranged that-the parts can beeasily manufactured and readily assembled;
With these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that we shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which: I
Figure 1 1s a perspective view of a comblIlZl-tlOIl'tOOl embodying the improvements of our invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view with a part broken away, and other parts shown in partially extended position; Fig. 3 is a side elevation with one of the side members removed, and the rivets in transverse section; Fig. 4: is a: detail view showing the manner of locking the movable members in open position; Fig. 5 is a horizontal longitudinal section; and, Fig. 6 is a transverse Sectional View on the line (i-6 of Fig.8.
' Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi.- cated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The handle of our improved combination tool embodies side pieces 1 which may be of any desired size and design and constructed of any desired substance or material, the same being held in spaced relation to each other by transverse rivets 15 or the like passing through them at their ends. The handle also embodies a middle partition plate 2 through which the attaching rivets 15 also extend, said plate forming, in connection with other parts, chambers 0e slots for the reception of some of the blades or implements which are embodied in the device. One of these implements is a blade 3 which is hinged at one end in one of said chambers to be retracted therein or swung out into an extended and operative position.
This blade is designed to form a chisel,
and may also serve as a rule, one face thereof being graduated linearly as indicated at 4:. In order to hold the blade 3 in an operative position, a spring '5 is secured between one of the side pieces 1 and the plate 2, said spring extending the entire length of the handle as shown and being formed at its free end contiguous to the butt of the blade 3 with a lug 5 designated to snap over a shoulder 6 formed on said butt. The spring 5 is formed with a protuberance 7 constituting a finger piece and by depressing this finger piece, the free end of the spring will be forced outwardly and eifect the release of the lug 5" from the shoulder 6 thereby permitting the blade 3 to be swung back into a retracted position. Between the other side pieces 1 and. the plate 2 another blade 8 is mounted. This blade is designed for use as a putty knife and is formed. with a shoulder 9 like the shoulder 6 designed to engage-a lug 6 on another spring 10 similar to the spring 5 and pro-.
vided with a push lug 7'. The springs 5 and 10 are supported by a single rivet 16, and are integral with filler blocks 17-18 between the central member 2 and the side members 1, the rivets 15 extending through the five parts, as shown.
One of the side pieces 1 is formed with a longitudinally extending opening 12 which may extend entirely therethrough as shown, and a tack puller or spike 11 which is pivoted at one end in said opening .so that it may be retracted therein or swung out laterally into an operative position; corre-' spondingly the other side piece is formed with an opening 12 in which a bucket hook 1b is pivotally mounted to swing laterally out from the handle. The plate 2 is extended at one end of the handle as shown whereby to produce a screw driver as indicated at 1%.
From the foregoing description in con nection wi hthe accompanying drawing, it will be seen that we have provided a very simple combination tool the various parts of which render the device susceptible for diversified uses.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
An implement of the class described including a side member and'a partition plate, a spring between the side member and the partition plate and rigidly secured at one end thereto and provided with a stop lug at the other end, a rivet extending throngh the partition plate the spring and connecting it intermediate its ends to said side and partition plate, said spring being further provided with a thumb lug projecting beyond the side member and and between the supporting rivets and the stationary end of the spring for forcing the intermediate part of 15 the spring inwardly and thereby outwardly ilefiecting the end which carries the stop v In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
