To all 7.0710721 it may concern:
Be it known that we, LAWRENCE E. Baa RINGEK and GILBERT \VRIGHT, citizens of the United States, residing at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, State of New York, have inventedv certain new and useful Improvements in Inclosed-Fuse Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to thermal cut-outs, and more especially to the indicating means for inclosed fuses whereby the condition of the main element'of the fuse is'made visually apparent on the outer surface of the casing.
The object of our invention-is to provide an indicator of this character which will positively perform its function and produce a clearer and more distinct indication. than devices of this character heretofore in use.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows in partside elevation and part section an ordinary inclosed fuse with our indicator attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a magnified section of the indicator and adjacent portion of the fuse casing; Fig. 3 is a plan view of theindicator before operation; and Fig. 4 is the same after operation.
The fuse shown in the drawing consists of a casing having a central tube 1 of fiber with its ends incl'osed by metallic caps 2 through which extend the contact blades 3, to the inner ends of which the main fuse element 4 is connected. An auxiliary fuse ele ment 5 extendsalong the inner surface of the casing connecting the end contacts 3'in' multiple with,..the main element 4, and the middle portionof the auxiliary element 5 is threaded through small apertures .6 in the wall of the fiber tube 1 and across a recess or chamber 7 formed in the outer surface aperture 10 through which the indicator 8 is normally seen, as shown in Fig. 3.
The indicator consists of fibrous material, such as rice paper, which has been treated thereof, we apply a flexible non-hygroscopic coating 12, such as collodion, to the treated fibrous material. Thiscoat-ing 12 maybe applied either by dipping or spraying or pouring over the fibrous material a solution of collodion.
p In order to render visually apparent whether or not the coating material has been properly applied to all parts of the fibrous material we discolor the coating material by means of a die soluble therein such as malachite green.
p The object of providing the recess or chamber 7 in the fiber tube beneaththe auxiliary element- 5 is to afford a supply of air to the inner surface of the indicator as well as to the outer surface and at the same time prevent conduction of heat from the external portion of the auxiliary element.
