PISTON-ROD CONNECTION.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES BENJAMIN REDRUP, a subject of the King of England, residing at Canton, Cardiff, in the county of Glamorgan, \Vales, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Rod Connections, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is particularly applicable to plungers or pistons having connectingrods of the non-cross-head type, such as are now used almost exclusively in internal combustion engines. Rods thus pivoted direct to the pistons or plungers without a cross-head exert, as is well known, considerable side thrust upon the connecting-rod end of such pistons or plungers and it has been proposed to get over this ditliculty by the use of ball bearings a plied to the piston or various parts mova 1e with the piston.
According to this invention the anti-friction bearing for the piston takes the form of one or more rollers so situated that their axes are concentric with the point about which the connecting-rod pivots. One or more such rollers may be mounted on the gudgeon-pin the axes of the roller being concentric with the same. \Vhen carried by the gudgeon-pin the roller or rollers are conveniently mounted on the central portion so that the ends may be free to engage the piston. When the rollers are carried by the gudgeonpin they are approximately of the same diameter as the bore of the barrel or cylinder in which they are employed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows in side elevation an anti-friction device constructed according to one method of carrying out this invention, the device being mounted in a cylinder which is broken away for the sake of clearness; Fig. 2 shows the same anti-friction device in section on aplane coincident with the axis of the gudgeon-pin of the piston, Fig. 3 shows in section on a plane coincident with the gudgeon-pin of the piston an antifriction device constructed according to another method of carrying out this invention, and Fig. at shows the parts illustrated in Fig. 3 in perspective and separated from each other, the piston being partly broken away for the sake of clearness.

The connecting-rod D is bifurcatedat D to engage the ends of the gudgeon-pin on opposite sides of the roller. The roller is approximately of the same diameter as the bore of the cylinder A, and the face C of V the roller, which is intended to bear against the interior wall of the cylinder, is formed to part of a sphere, sothat it may fit the cylinder, as will be readily understood.
It will be seen that the thrust of the connecting-rod D when in the position shown in Fig. 1, would thrust the gudgeon-pin end of the piston against the right-hand side of the interior wall of the cylinder, but this thrust instead of being borne by the piston is now taken by the roller 0, which rolling on the surface of the cylinder offers much less resistance than would be afforded by a sliding body such as the piston.
In the construction shown in Figs. 8 and- 4, the roller is divided into two parts, or made in the form of two separate rollers E E respectively, placed at opposite ends of the gudgeon-pin F. Each roller is made approximately hemispherical, but the rollers do not touch at the center, space being left between them for the connecting-rod G and an arm H that is carried by the piston H. The connecting-rod G has a head Gr whereby it is engaged with the gudgeon-pin, and the arm H of the piston is bifurcated at H and engages the gudgeon-pin on opposite sides of the head G. The operation of this construction of roller is the same as with the roller C C.
By using an anti-friction bearing-such as constitutes the subject matter of the present invention, the connecting-rod parts can be made shorter than is usual in practice without unduly increasing the friction due to side thrust. Usually the length of the con necting-rods employed in internal combustion engines equals the length of stroke multiplied by 2.5 whereas in an engine wherein the present invention is employed, the length of the connecting-rods can be reduced so that they equal the stroke multiplied by 1.5 only, thereby rendering the whole engine more compact.
It will beunderstood that the two constructions described above, are only given by way of example and that modifications may be made in detail without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a cylinder of a piston therefor, a connecting rod pivotally secured to the piston, and a roller arrangedbeyond the contacting portion of the piston with the cylinder for engaging the cylinder to prevent the thrust of the connecting rod on the piston, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a cylinder of a piston therefor, a connecting rod pivotally secured to the piston, and rotatable means movable with the piston and arranged beyond the contacting portion of the piston with the cylinder for engaging the cylinder to take the thrust of the connecting rod, substantially as described.

The combination with the cylinder of a piston therefor, ears projecting from one end of the piston, a connecting rod pivotally secured to the ears, and means revoluble a around said pivot point engaging the wall *of the cylinder for relieving the thrust of the connecting rod on the piston, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a cylinder of a piston therefor, ears projecting from one end of the piston, a transverse pincarried by the ears, a connecting rod pivoted on the pin, and means, rotatably mounted on the pin and engaging the Wall of the cylinder for relieving the thrust of the connecting rod on the piston, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a cylinder of a piston therefor, a transverse pin carried by the piston beyond its contacting portion with the cylinder, a connecting rod pivoted on the pin, and hemispherical shaped members rotatably mounted on the ends of the pin and engaging the wall of the cylinder for relieving the thrust of the connecting rod on the piston, substantially as described.
