CHIMNEY-COWL.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that LNATHAN DOUGLAS, of Goshen, county of Elkhart, State of Indienst, have invented at new and improved Chimney-Cap and Ventilator; and

'l do hereby declare that the following is al full, clear, -and exact description of the construction and operaa part of chimney broken out, showing an end view of cap.

L a is a.- mctallic bed, to which is attached the stundards b b.

At the lower end of these standards are the pivotpinsp' i, to which is hung the curved plate or cap I), by little ears at each end.

Gap D has it slottedv upright standard, H at or near its center, through which the end g of wire stnndnrd e is locked or pivoted.

Roller or rock-shaft K, through which rod e passes, is pivoted at each end at or near the top of standard b b.

Near the top of wire e, or between top of rockshaft K and end of wire e, is the fun-plate c, for the purpose of holding the wind to tilt curved cap D and close the opening in chimney on the Windward side.

The operation is as follows:

When the wind blows 'against the plate or fau c and curved cap D, t-he rockshzii`t K rocks on pivots j' f, tilting the curved cap D down close and tight on the Windward side of chimney, (as shown by dotted lines,) thereby preventing the wind :md rain from driving down chimney,- nnd alsoincreases the draught by the upwzu'd current of nir, as'shown by the arrows.

The bed-piece a a also serves as an excellent protection for the top of chimney in protecting the brickwork from the act-ion of the weather.

All of the pivoted points are above the curved plete D, and therefore cannot be obstructed by soot. The

vane c can be made quite ornamental, and can be used as :t lightning conductor by insulating the plate a a from the brick-work and connecting lightning-rod to the plete.V

I do not claim the can D as n new device when used wit-hout the arm H, A(md detached from thel tiltingrod e and rock-shaft K; but

1.` The cap-plate of the chimney a a, when used in combination with the device for closing the chimney on the Windward side by the action of' :t current of air, A:is herein specified.
