To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 'SoHwEI- KERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented certain Improvements in Building Structures, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to certain improvements in building structures, and'more par- 10 ticularly inthat class of structures wherein the walls, partitions, etc., are provided with attached facings formed from molded cement, concrete or other plastic substance,
andthe object of the invention is, in part, to provide a facing slab or block of novel and geous employment in such structures, and in part, to provide means of a simplified and improved character for holding'such slabs or blocks in position upon the frame work of the structure, whereby the said slabs or blocks may be conveniently and quickly applied'in position for use, and are supported with greater security when so applied.
The invention, consists in certain novel features of the construction, and combinations and arrangements of the several parts of the facing slabs or blocks and of such attaching means therefor, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the structureis rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient of erection and use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth. Referring first to Figs. 1 and '2, the wall of the structure is formed from two series 1, and 2, of their slabs or sections which are molded from cement, concrete, or other suit able plastic material in sizes and contours such as are desirable to adapt the slabs or sections of therespective series for use as facings for-the inner and outer surfaces of the walls of the structure. For this purpose, the exposed surfaces of said slabs'or sections may be ornamented or molded in any appropriate design or may be made plain or smooth, as maybe desired. The slabs 'or sections 3, 3 of the respective series comprised in the facings l and 2 are adapted to be rested one upon another and edge to edge in'a well known way, so as to produce such facings for the wall of the structure, and to facilitate their setting, each slab or section will, by preference, be provided with tongues 4, 4 extended along one vertical and one horizontal edge, theother vertical and horizontal edges of such slab or section having grooves 5, 5 wherein are adapted to be accurately received the tongues 4-, 4 at the contracting edges of adjacent slabs or sections. In setting the slabs or sections 3, 3' to form the facings 1v and 2 for the outer and inner surfaces of the wall of the structure, the said slabs or sections are arranged in horizontal courses in a well known way, and
each course are midway between those of the subjacent and superjacent courses so as to be overlapped thereby.
As shown in the drawings, the several slabs or sect- ions 3, 3 are provided witl1.'at taching -means, which are herein shown as made in the form of metallic plates or. members 6, 6 embedded within the plastic substance during the manufacture of the slabs or .sections and having parts 7, 7 exposed at. the surfaces of said slabs or sections in po- .sition for convenient engagement with securing or anchoring devices whereby the slabs orsections may be conveniently held in relation during their application to the structure. In certain cases it will also. be
- 'ments formed from .wire netting, although simple wires or metal strips may also be used with good results, and I have shown the attaching means as formed of metallic plates each of which has one end provided with divergent arms 9, 9 which are interlocked in the mesh of the wire netting 8, and have serrations 10,10 capable-of engagement with the netting, the extremities of the arms being herein shown as bent to produce hooks or loops '11 which are engaged with the netting to afford a secure connection of the parts prior to molding of the slabs or sections. v
The reinforcements 8, 8 are usually embedded in the slabs or sections-at points central of their thickness, and in the drawings '1 have shown the attaching plates 6, 6 so positioned that their parts7, 7 are exposed at the edges of the slabs or sections whereat 'the tongues 4, 4 are produced, the propor-' tions being such that the parts 7, 7 of the attaching plates do not project beyond the outer surfaces of the tongues 4, 4, in order to lessen the liability of bending or loosening of the attaching of the slabs or sections and during, transportation, and said exposed parts 7,, 7 of theattaching plates are vbent over laterally as shown at 12'on the drawings, so as to stand out of line with the tongues 4,4, and in substantial alinement with the inner surfaces ofithe slabs or sections so as tobeadapted to; fit accurately against the studding or framing of the structure, as shown in 8 when? the slabs .or sections are to be attached? eto.

Where desired the slabs -or sections may also be employed in that class of structures the walls of which are molded homogeneously from concrete or the like, the a ertured parts 7 serving to receive the en s of tie rods orbonds 17 whichare screw-threaded to receive nuts 18, 18 at their opposite ends between which the said projecting parts 7] are securely held, the said rods or bonds 17 being of such length as to hold the slabsv or 1 sections in spaced relation,'as shown in Fig.
2 so as to produce a mold which may be filled with concrete or a similar plastic filling 19 adapted upon hardening, to unite the facings 1 and 2 in such a manner as to produce a substantially homogeneous wall of great strength. This use of my improvementsis particularly advantageous, since it permits of erecting the walls without the loo employment of costly scafiolding or' mold I sections, the nuts 18 being capable of ad- Zjustment to regulate the spacing of the facings as may be desiredfor plumbing the walls or giving batter thereto, and the iinolded nature of the slabs affording any de sired treatment or ornamentation at a minimum of expense andlabor.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. facing slab formed from molded plastic material, having a reinforcement embedded in it and provided'with a projecting tongue extended along one edge portion and an attaching device having longitudinally divergent arms embedded in said slab and connected by means of the arms with the'reinforcement within the same and provided with a part projecting from the edge of the slab and adapted for engagement wit-h a fastening device. A facing slab formed from molded plastic material having a reinforcement embedded in it, and provided with a projecting tongue extended along its edge portion and having recesses at intervals, and an attaching device having longitudinally. divergent arms embedded in said slab and connected with the reinforcement within the same, and provided with a art projecting from the edge of the slab 1n alinement with recesses in the tongue thereof, and adapted for engagement with a fastening evice.
3. A facing slab formed from molded plastic material having a reinforcement embedded in it, and an attaching device having serrations engaged with the reinforcement within the slab and having a part projecting from the slab for engagement with a fastening device.
4. A facing slab formed from molded plastic material, havinga reinforcement em-- device having longitudinally divergent arms embedded in said slab and connected with the reinforcement within the same, and provided with a part projecting from the edge of the'slab in alinement with the recess'm the tongue thereof and adapted for engagement w1t-h a fastening device, said projecting part being disposed out of almement with the longitudinally. divergent arms.
