Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. WELSH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair-Carpet Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a stair carpet holder, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character adjustable to fit steps having risers of varyin heights, the major portion of the device lying behind the stair carpet, and between the carpet and the riser, the lower or foot portion of the device engaging the stair carpet at the rear portion of the tread of the step to hold the same in place without the use of tacks or other fastenings that would mar the woodwork.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stair carpet holder constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is a detail edge view illustrating the application of the device, Fig. 3 is an enlarged edge view and, Fig. 4 is a horizontal section upon line 44 of Fig. 3 with the arts in vertical alinement.

Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a slotted tubular member in which a block 6 is disposed for sliding movement. A screw 7 is threaded into this block, the shank of said screw passing through a slot 8 formed in one of the faces of said slotted tubular member. A shank 9 is pivotally connected at .10 to said block and is adapted to swing out through a slot 11 in said tubu lar member. A collar 12 mounted upon the shank is adapted to fit over the upper end of the tubular member to hold the shank into vertical alinement with the tubular member 9. The upper end of the shank 9 carries a toothed late 13 which is adapted to engage the un erside of the overhanging portion of the tread of the step. A foot piece 14 of substantially J-shape is provided with an extension 15 adapted to enter the lower end of the tubular member 5.

The operation of the device is as it lows: By loosening screw 7 and moving the block 6 upwardly or downwardly, the distance from the upper face of the plate 13 to the lower side of the foot 14 may be adjusted to adapt the device for use with steps having risers of different heights. When the device Is in use, the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 with the toothed plate 13 engaging the underside of the overhanging portion 16 of the upper step and with the stair carpet indicated at 17 passin downwardly and rearwardly between t e portions of the foot 14 and then extending forwardly beneath the lower member of said foot, said foot bearing firmly upon the carpet and clamping said carpet against the rear portion of the lower step.

It is apparent that by the arrangement set forth, the length of the structure may be so adjusted that it may be wedged into posiltion to thereby securely hold the carpet in p ace.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that sim le and eflioient means are herein provided or accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim is:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a tubular member, of a carpet en aging foot carried by the lower end of said tubular member, a shank, a toothed member carried by said shank, means for connecting said shank to said tubular member at various positions of vertical adjustment, said means comprising a block slidably mounted in said tubular member and a binding screw engaging said block and projecting through a slot in said tubular member, and means for locking said shank into longitudinal alinement with said tubular member.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a tubular member, of a carpet engaging foot carried by the lower end of said tubular member, a shank, a

toothed member carried by said shank, 'means for connecting said shank to said tu bular member at various positions of vertical adjustment, said means comprising a block slidably mounted in said tubular membar and a bindin screw engaging said block and projecting through a slot in said tubular member, and means for locking said shank into longitudinal alinement with said tubular member, said means comprising a collar adapted to embrace both the shank and the tubular member.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a tubular body member, of a carpet engaging foot of substantially Jshape lying at right angles to said tubular member and having an extension projectinginto said tubular member, there being slots formed in said tubular member, a blo mounted to slide in said tubular member, a shank pivotally connected to said copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by

block and adapted to swing out through one of said slots, a binding screw passing through the other of said slots and adapted to bind said block in varying positions of vertical adjustment, a collar adapted to embrace both the shank and the tubular member to lock said shank into longitudinal alinement With said tubular member, and a toothed plate upon the upper end of said shank.
