This intention relates to imprm'eneents in :1. combined ehilds carriage and sleigh, and has for one of its objects to simplify and i improve the construction and increase the t actor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this r-haraurter which may be readily and quickly transformed from sleigh to a carriage, or t'r n'ra earrings in a sleigh without detaolsing or removing any of the parts. and which may also be employed. as a brake to support the carriage from movement when required.

The improved device may be applied without material structural changes to the framework of childrens carriages of various make but. for-the purpose of illustration is shown applied to the base framevmrk of i a childs oon't'entional carriage, the framework being represented conventionally at 10 and embraces spaced side members and tISIiS-JQISB end members, as shown, and with 3 an upwardly curved portion to which the 3 l andles are attached. as represented at 11. l

Each of the runners including the curved. end portions is formed from a single piece and preferably with the central portion 19 semieiroular, while the ends FLO--21 are illillllill', the tubular portions merging into the central semicircular portion, as shown. At its upper end the curved portion '20 is enlarged into :1 head 22, while the tern'iinal of the. curved portion 21 terminates. in a similar head 2'3. riveted or otherWiu secured respw'lirely to head and extended rearwardly in the form of a bracket 30, while the upper end of the rod 25 is likewise turned over and passed downwardly in the apertures in the head '23, as shown at 31. The side rails 10 of the vehicle frame extend beneath the turnedover portions of the vertical guide members 2-l--25 and are held thereby from upward movement, while the heads '22 23 hear heneath the frame rails and tnus' serve as clips to firmly couple the side rails, runners and guide members. Pivoted at 32 to the bracket 30 is an elbow lever 33, while a similar elbow lever 34 is pivoted at' 35 to the downwardly directed portion 31 of the rod 25. The lever 34 is provided with a rearwardly extending trcadle member 3o, as shown. One of the arms of each of the elbow levers 33-34 is coupled by a rod 3?, while the other arm of each elbow lever is coupled respectively by chains 3839 to the bearings 1516 of the members 13-44. Surrounding the rod 24 between the hearing 15 and the runner 10Q021 is a spring 40, while a similar spring 41 surrounds t e rod 25 between the lower bearing 16 and the runner. The springs are connected at their ends respectively to the runners and the bearings and thus exert their force to maintain the runners yieldably in their upward position.
Depending from the head 23 of the curved terminal 21 of the runner is a stop 42 with which the chain carrying arm of the elbow lever 3-1 engages when the rod 37 is pulled a little below the center, to limit the movcmcntof the lever and itsattachments and thus form. a locking device to maintainthe runners in their lowered position and the springs distended and the wheels out of contactwith the ground. Vhen the parts are in this position the improved device is in condition to be employed as a sleigh, and when it is desired to transform the sleigh into a carriage it is only necessary for the attendant to draw the trea'dle 36 rearwardly to break the lock of the rod 37, when the reaction of the springs 40t1 will immediately and automatically elevate the runners into the position shown in Fig. 1, with the wheels bearing upon the ground.
The improved device will also he found of great advantage for employment as a brake to hold the upper frame from movementwhcn desired. Thus if the attendant dcsircs to leave the carriage with its occupant for a time. she simply depresses the trcadle 'M until the chain bearing arm of the lever 31 engages the stop 42. when the carriage portion will be clcvatcdand the runners can.- ed to engage the ground, and thus act as an etl'ectual brake and prevent the movement of the carriage.
The improved device is simple in con struction, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied without'material structural changes to carriage frames of various forms by slight and immaterial changes in the ci'instruction ot' theportion 10 of the carriage.
Hav ng thus described the invention,- what is claimed as new is:-
I. In a combined childs carriage and sleigh, runners, each of said runners having vertical guide members near the. ends, side lime in slidable engagementwith said vcrmembers to said side rails, side bars in slidahle engagement with said vertical guide members, ground wheels carried by said side bars, springs operating to maintain said runners yieldingly in their elevated position relative to said side bars, a lever carried by each of said bracket arms and operating to elevate said side bars against the resistance of said spring. coupling means between said levers and said side bars, coupling means between said levers, and a locking device connected to one of said levers. Tu a combined childs carriage and sleigh, runners, each of said runners comprising a body portion and inwardly curving end portions, avertical guide member extending between each of the terminals of the runners and the body portion thereof and spaced apart, side bars having bearings at the ends for slidable engagement with the guide members. springs connectedto said runners and to said side bar bearings, an operating lever connected to each of said guide members. coupling means between said operating levers and said side bars, and a coupling device between said operating levers.
4. In a combined childs carriage and sleigh, runners having vertical guide members. side bars slidably. engaging the guide nicn'ihers. a bracket arm extending from each of said guide members, an elbow lever pivoted upon each of said brackets, couplingmcans between one arm of each of said clbmv' lcversand the side bars, a connecting rod between the other arms of the elbow levers, and a lever ann connected to one of said elbow levers.
